Kitchener RBJ Schlegel Park & Recreation Centre | ?m | 2s | City of Kitchener

This is actually phase 3 of the overall park project. Phase 1 was completed in September of 2020 which included the opening of the two artificial fields, parking and play ground facilities. The cricket field and the natural turf field were built, however they opened a year or two later. Phase 2 of the project opened and was completed in late 2022 with the facilities opening in 2023. Phase 2 included a splash pad, and various courts (Basketball/Pickleball and Tennis). The washrooms on site are yet to open but they expected to this spring/summer, the washrooms are located in a heritage building that was relocated 200m to its current position on the site.

The final portion is the 144 million dollar recreation center which will be home to a FIFA sized indoor field, and a pool, with indoor cricket batting cages. This isn't expected to cost tax payers anything as all the funding is coming from provincial/federal grants as well as development charges. Construction is expected to start this spring. This is also the second or third iteration of the project with the current iteration being 80,000 sqft larger than the initial concept.

Thanks! And the outdoor field can accommodate several sports (cricket, soccer, etc.)

When the city first started the rec centre they had it split into 2 phases with phase 1 including the swimming pool, common area, and field house. Phase 2 included a gymnasium which when they started construction was only conceptual. The city has gone ahead with that conceptual gym and they have received conditional site plan approval for it. As of right now construction hasn't started on that section of the building but the rest of the building is progressing well, the aquatic centre is structural complete and they are actively working on the steel for the field house.

The city has some live cameras for the site to record the progress. Two of the cameras only have footage until the middle of February, however the third camera is still active. I have taken a screenshot of the live feed from today to illustrate the progress. You can also view it here: https://timelapse.stealthmonitoring.com/kircproject1/

The park is now open for the year, they had it closed all winter while they were connecting into underground utilities. Many of the paths were ripped up to do the underground work, as of right now they're all still gravel with many of the people pushing strollers struggling, hopefully they get those paved soon to make life easier to access the playground/splash pad. However beyond that the park is still relatively accessible even with this project going on.

This is the aquatic center portion of the building, taken April 18th.

This is the current progress on the indoor soccer field, it will eventually extend to roughly where I took the picture.
