My neighbourhood wins! The staff at our old bank branch used to know us by name since we were so visible.

The visible majority award goes to the Kingsway, with Leaside coming in a close second.

So I guess now being born in Toronto makes you a miniority.

^ We're talking visible minorities. If you're born in Toronto to Chinese parents, you're still a visible minority.

My neighbourhood wins!

... and guess who won it for you? People like me! :)

I could quickly whip one up for the whole GTA and have it up by tomorrow! By %VM and %Immg!

Awaiting the 2006 Census - Brampton will look much different, and I wouldn't be surprised if it beats all other GTA cities apart from Markham in the % VisMin.

Since when did being Chinese in Toronto equate to a Minority?

Well, that chart sure vindicates my past labelling of the Beach(es) as "White Town"...

There's something a bit off about the hard and fast "visible" categorization. Woodbridge should have Leaside beat by a country mile ...

2 of 10 Woodbridge census tracts do beat Leaside/Kingsway with about 4.5% vismin. Kleinburg is 3%...

But I found one that beat that one in no time - 400.10. It's a block bounded by Steeles, McCowan, Denison, and Middlefield: maps.google.com/maps?f=q&...4&t=k&om=1

2001 population - 7645.
VisMin pop - 7455.
= an almost unbelievable 97.5%, like a bizarro Livonia. And it's diverse, too, 25% Chinese, 30% East Indian, 7% Jamaican, 0.3% Swiss, etc.

The tract is 0.89km² so the density is 8590 people/km². I'd bet money that this is the densest census tract in the GTA containing absolutely nothing but single detached houses (4.3 persons per household will do that).

All those "Toronto is passing 50% foreign-born" stories always fail to mention the 905, which is just as interesting.

Why do people have to use the PC term "visible minority" when all that means is "non-white"? Is being called "non-white" really that offensive, since both terms imply that you're not "one of them" (whites/the majority)

Becuase there still isn't agreement on what the meaning of "white" is.

Being polite, using euphemisms is ever since part of anglosaxon lingual policy, thus instead of 'it stinks', 'we' are saying 'it doesn't smell good'...
It's a funny custom but it's all about diplomacy,
and can be very useful:rollin

Re: reply

My Toronto is mapped on the basis of small encampments where "frightfully nice people" live, surrounded by vast tracts of land marked "here be dragons". None of it can be broken down on the basis of skin colour.
