The fact there is no residential component is a huge relief in my mind, this is not a large area in the grand scheme of things, seeing space wasted on residential spaces would be a travesty (yes I use that word intentionally), I say this as given the market it'd be all to easy to plop down a few "high end" residential towers and waste say 1/3 of the site on said space which contributes nothing to the community, the province, and the country. Honestly I think a similar comment applies to office space ...


I would have loved to see the EX integrated into this proposal, one vision for the broader site would make sense here (though I can see the difficulties involved with that)

I don't think any of the posts since it was announced show either of those. Sure, people are cautious still since we won't be seeing plans until later this year - but I don't think anyone is disappointed with the announcement. In fact, I think it was a better announcement than anyone was expecting.
 
I'm very surprised that the Ford government is excluding casinos, considering their constant babble about treating Ontarians like adults in the context of alcohol consumption - which I agree with; I lean to the left but I'm not fond of nannyism. They have already reached rock bottom in voter approval; I'm not sure how a casino would have made things worse. It would have been one sure way for the private investors Ford wants to make money; I guess there will have to be some kind of professional sports facility or large retail complex.

Why would they want a casino competing with Casino Woodbine, which is in Dougie's own backyard. I have no knowledge and would like to avoid accusations that he may have friends related to Casino Woodbine, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case.
 
This is just another poorly conceived Ford fantasy that will amount to the square root of zilch--not unlike his other failed schemes (NFL team/stadium, monorail, ferris wheel, Portlands mega-mall, etc...)

In three years this pathetic government will be kicked to the curb (Ford maybe even sooner) and we can go back to the viable plans that were already well underway during the Liberal dynasty--all at greater cost thanks to the pointless 4 year interruption.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic and/or ironic. What possible "value" can the public get by losing a unique, heritage protected, taxpayer financed asset to some faceless entertainment conglomerate/private developer--and likely friend of the Ford family?

Exactly! Woodbine Live does not want to compete with another casino right downtown.
 
To be completely honest I would not have mind a casino in the Atlantis pods, it is actually ingenious. It would make it a year round destination with night life. Even in the summer you could gamble and visit the islands.

With the view and the isolation, the pods would have made a decent place for a casino. You really cannot do much with them.

It would be nice but Tory and his downtown councilors aren't fond of casinos
