Wong-Tam is the embarrassment - she has clearly taken a cue from Layton insofar as she has never encountered an issue that does not require extensive studies and deliberations led by her. Look at her ramblings on making Yonge street into pedestrian corridor......she has staked her future on being the eternal counterbalance to anything that does not reek of collectivist sentiment. We need another City induced building code study like we need a renaming of Dundas Square............to Layton Square.

Anything that gets her name in the press is what she wants.......so little time at Council and so much she wants to straighten out......

Wong-Tam is what she is: a champagne socialist with ambitions to power and a high self regard (aka - a narcissist).

Please. Your comment is an embarrassment.

Wong-Tam got the private sector to pay for the study to look at changing one block of Yonge Street. Then you have a Councillor like Denzil Minnan-Wong who asks for a spiteful taxpayer paid $375,000 study to look at removing/reducing the pedestrian oriented activity of the Y-D scramble intersection, all because it adds a minute to his commute into downtown to City Hall. Talk about a wasteful study!

Oy Vay! It looks like another Toronto Sun worshipper has blessed us with his insightful opinions, I just hope he goes a little easy on the Sue Ann-Levy terminology.

OMG. I can hear the knives sharpening.
 
His nickname says it all.
I've attended several meetings with Wong-Tam, she's energetic, personable, has endless ambitions for her ward based on dozens upon dozens of meetings she has taken with BIA's & neighbourhood associations so far in her one year term so her votes, amendments, views and ideas reflect those of her constituents that she represents. That's how a good City Councillor works.
So yes, we need a study to set new guidelines for developers regarding all those dangerous glass blow-outs that we've witnessed in the past 1/2 year.
 
I've interviewed Wong-Tam and she's the real deal: smart, impassioned, courageous, positive, courteous. I'd hate to be a conservative in this city - the councillors who are representing your interests are such drips, flakes and psychos.

Yup, hence why when it comes to the city I seem like a "leftie pinko" when in reality I'm more centre-right. :p The conservative reps in the city are just awful.
 
This might be a silly question (and already addressed), but since the balcony glass is removed how is the builder protecting condo owners/visitors from going on their balcony? I hope the door is locked from the outside. I would hate for a drunk guest to wonder out there or something.

Thats exactly what is done. The doors are locked from outside.
 
A couple points:

  • Doors are bolted shut from the exterior
  • The flawed tempered glass is nearly all down
  • Lanterra has put forward a couple of proposed solutions which are being tested by Toro, but ultimately require municipal approval (permit issued by the Chief Building Official - Ann Borooah)
  • Any longer-term code related issues have nothing to do with the City of Toronto, we have a Model National Building Code (MNBC) and an Ontario Building Code (OBC).
  • Under the Building Code Act, the OBC supercedes any/all local by-laws to ensure consistency across the province;
  • OBC falls under the Building & Development Branch of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs & Housing. Any code changes typically fall under the five year code cycle (mid cycle changes are possible) and are based on a variety of technical committees - which is not to be confused with politically based decision making.
  • This issue is well outside of the mandate or jurisdiction of a municipal councilor - the province is certainly aware of the issue - afterall MMAH is essentially across the road from the Murano

Well said Mike - hence my comment about Wong-Tam grandstanding and being a know all........fantastic at how the ad-hominem attacks erupted from the highly opinionated but lowly informed...............I stand by my opinion on Wong-Tam.....I too have met her and looked at the white of her eyes..............she is energetic and well intentioned and keen to be a new type of Councillor, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,that she was a principal behind the QAIA useful idiot movement and that she is not honest enough to admit it is to her eternal shame.............
