Toronto Municipal Election 2018: Mayor’s Race

There's good reason. On the first day of the campaign Tory/Kouvalis bros called her an 'extremist'. Today it's "air headed charlatan", tomorrow they'll call her 'urban planning barbie'. That's easily where this is going. They will definitely bring immigration into it. I didn't hesitate because it's obvious that's what's going to happen.

I have no problem pointing out what someone is siding with.
I'm very flattered you think of me as a Tory or Kouvalis bro - but I'm just an independent thinker not persuaded by socialist causes.

And she is air headed - only an airhead would (and I'll focus on my neck of the woods because obviously I can't follow the whole city):

1) Tell Metrolinx there isn't enough density to support a Park Lawn GO Station
2) Estimate the population growth in the ward to be about 20% less than what has been estimated to date
3) Push for an LRT nobody wants around here (we aren't interested in yet another 45 min streetcar trip downtown - the word rapid is forgotten here)
4) Release a transit plan without the Park Lawn GO station after it was approved in council, set as a city priority, and now being worked on by Metrolinx.

Yep - airhead.

You don't go from Chief Planner of Peterborough, to Chief Planner of Toronto. Clearly she was in way over her head.

She has nice hair though. I understand in Canada that means one deserves a chance at getting elected.

I'm fairly ok with her transit plan, but it's not the "bold vision" she keeps talking about. Also, what exactly does "enhanced bus service" mean? If it's not fully separated BRT on those streets, it's useless.

Isn't that the point- that it's now a provincial Metrolinx project rather than a city one?

Keesmaat's transit plans seem to focus primarily on projects that can be headed by the city- hence projects like GO RER (with the exception of SmartTrack) are missing from her diagram.

I'm sure that if you ask her to clarify, she would do so.

All the new 416 stations are part of her plan, except Park Lawn.

She was against this station - she is still against this station. This is ideological and not rooted in fact, given her office lying through their teeth to Metrolinx in 2016.

I remember this board collectively scratching their heads at Metrolinx's rejection of Park Lawn and the outdated data used for population growth, jobs, residents, etc... Guess who gave Metrolinx that data? Her office.

Yes, but those are part of the city-proposed Smarttrack project, or whatever form it takes now. The new Park Lawn station will be part of the Lakeshore RER, am I right?

Again, I would probably try to contact her campaign and ask them to clarify on that issue.

Meanwhile, Tory complains today that Keesmaat's plan is almost exactly the same as his, but following her plan will lead to "chaos" and worse service on every mode of transit.

Even if her plan was literally exactly the same as what Tory has promised, I would trust her ability to move it forward much more than his.

I'm fairly ok with her transit plan, but it's not the "bold vision" she keeps talking about. Also, what exactly does "enhanced bus service" mean? If it's not fully separated BRT on those streets, it's useless.

It's not a bold vision at all, really. Its basically "Lets stop fucking around with new bold visions, and actually build the visions that are already on the books" :)

So I guess we'll get the first real poll of the mayoral race next week then.

Also, a response from the Tory campaign (with Kouvalis's fingerprints all over it). Again trying to tie Keesmaat to the NDP:

I would like to hear her stance on crime? BTW, shots were fired inside Yorkdale Mall
Square one and Scarborough Town center have police stations inside the mall. Yorkdale has got to get on this. I don't expect metal detectors at the mall but I don't know how a super high end mall can continue to grow without backlash while having guns shot in or around it yearly. Is this the third incidence since Joeys?

Before you know it Yorkdale will be home to 10,000 condo residents so they're probably waiting til then to extract additional security from the developer.

She needs to have a bold response for tackling this issue a.s.a.p. Crime is definitely the #1 issue in this election. Sorry Tory, we need to worry about gun violence breaking out – at any time.
