I'm remembering now.... we shot in the lobby of one of these buildings for season 1 of Designated Survivor. Not that I went there myself, mind you - I was in an office at Downsview and worked off of supplied photographs and dimensions.... I designed a bunch of utilitarian government signage for the scenes taking place on that location. The place had a grand feel to it - I think we were playing it as FBI headquarters... had to design a giant agency floor crest for the lobby. It felt like a classic big American institutional building - solid and spacious. Going further back, maybe 15 years ago my late brother, who was working in the complex at the time servicing the HVAC and cooling gear, gave me an informal tour of the complex... we went into a labyrinth of tunnels and even on to the rooftop of the 24 story building... it was pretty cool. Fingers crossed that this place gets a lovely updating.

I was a public servant for five whole months in 1988-89 (that's all I could manage before fleeing back to the private sector, ugh); I worked in Ferguson Block, so I was very familiar with the two-storey Macdonald Block podium that links all four buildings. I enjoyed the scenes in Don McKellar's film Last Night that were filmed there, with his late wife Tracy Wright.

…and I'm still left wondering; are the replacement blocks of stone expected to weather to a similar tone as the older stone in not too long a time? Because this looks terrible so far (although I acknowledge there's a long way to go still in the restoration/renewal process here).
