Havergal College wins Ontario Wood Design Award

April 20, 2022

The Havergal College Upper and Junior Schools have won the Ontario Wood Design Institutional Award for 2021.

The Havergal College master plan envisions an expanded and sustainable campus for a leading independent day and boarding school in Toronto for girls. The work was implemented through two phased projects: a two-storey expansion to the Junior School and a three-story expansion and renovation of the Upper School. Both projects are designed to meet the Toronto Green Standard and achieve LEED Gold certification, setting a new standard for energy efficiency and green building on the campus. In each project, mass timber structure, interior finishes and exterior wood components were designed as signature elements, each relating to the school’s woodland grounds – evoking the natural setting of the campus and strengthening bonds between students and environment.

“The winning projects reflect the innovation of an evolving wood culture that is gaining momentum in Ontario,” explained Marianne Berube, Executive Director for the Ontario Wood WORKS! Program. “We’re happy to partner with OFIA this year to recognize the design and construction teams that are pushing the boundaries of innovation for wood construction.”

Havergal College Upper School receives Copper Award from the NACIA

July 26, 2022

The Havergal College Upper School is one of 11 innovative copper building projects from the United States and Canada to be announced as a winner in the Copper Development Association’s annual North American Copper in Architecture (NACIA) awards program. Launched in 2008, the NACIA awards program recognizes copper’s versatile use in building construction and promotes its innovative applications.

Winning projects represented a wide variety of design styles and buildings, including educational buildings, government facilities, and churches – all of which were executed with remarkable detail, creativity, and craftsmanship.

‎“‎The 2022 NACIA winners exhibit copper’s endless range of applications through innovation in new and historical restoration projects,” ‎said Larry Peters, Project Manager & Architectural Applications Specialist for CDA. “Answering the growing demand to meet environmental goals using sustainable building materials, the 2022 winners demonstrate a perfect balance of maximizing green materials and longevity, creating architecture masterpieces for generations to come.”

The upper school expansion completed in 2021 provides Havergal students an arts and technology-focused space to inspire learning, curiosity, and creativity, and to enhance a shared sense of community within a remarkable natural setting. The new 22,000 square foot addition has transformed an under-utilized service area, creating a new landscaped courtyard alongside three stories of studios, adaptable teaching and gathering space. The new copper elements at Havergal upper school tells a story of the building's craft, attention to detail, resilience, sustainability, and its transforming character over time.

The 11 winning projects were selected by a panel of judges based on the presence and use of copper and the significance of the project at hand – whether historic, modern, or otherwise. A complete list of winners can be found on copper.org.
