Someone a few pages back noted how much better this would look if the black portions were inset even a tiny bit, and that's now all I can focus on. It would've made it look so much more refined/less cheap.

I hear you, but after the OMB slenderized this building's floor plate, I get that's there's little room for any indent. This thing is basically a small unit student housing dorm with every square foot accounted for.

IMO, if they used curved glass for the corners of the black bands it may have given the building more distinction between the two colors.
