The approved zoning plan had a full retention of the hotel.

This would also be a pretty big building to be demolished, right up there with the concourse building as the largest so far this century.

This strongly suggests that the position they took in the OMB hearing against GRID was, in a word, bullsh*t. I mean, it seemed obvious at the time that they had no intention of actually building that tower and looked like it was just a bargaining chip... and this kind of confirms that.

Oh 100% it was always strictly to get Grid to provide the 12.5m setback, and rightfully so.

I imagine we will see a 2 tower application shortly to rezone It again to their actual intended development.

At the start of the pandemic, the hotel was housing medical workers at nearby hospitals (for free). But the Grand's time is at an end, I think. Yesterday, I saw a GFL truck load a Bobcat into the front lobby, likely for internal demolition.

Amexon and Core combined to do a pretty solid job on 488 Uni Ave, hope to see them continue the good work and go for an encore here.

It'll be sad to lose this Brutalist landmark. I think that in 20 years, people will regret the loss for a mundane glass tower. I'd argue it's a heritage building.

Fences went up this morning. The Grand signs are up, the flag is still flying, but the rooms are being emptied out. A few GFL vehicles are on site.
In the bright sun, you can see the blank concrete hidden behind the glass veneer.
