I disagree. The Eglinton West subway would have forced the entire Line to be heavy rail subway and thus had made much of the Crosstown's route unadvisable due to low density.
Density is not the only factor! The line connects with so many others meaning that riders can access it from three different existing Subway Lines, and three different regional Rail lines that have way more capacity than a Subway. Also there is an insane amount of development happening anyways!

Now that Metrolinx has stated its intentions to indeed extend the Eglinton LRT to Pearson, I have created a separate thread so the two separate projects don't get mixed up and get the attention each deserves.

We in York-South Weston are the Davids attempting to stop the Goliath that is Metrolinx from decimating our parks because of their decision to run the Eglinton Crosstown LRT above ground through the Eglinton flats instead of tunnelling it. This parkland is a designated Greenbelt zone with large swaths of mature urban forests; it also includes one of the city’s largest networks of sports fields in one of the most economically disadvantaged areas of the city.

I actually live in the Mount Dennis area. The elevated portion is next to sports fields (soccer, cricket, tennis, golf, etc.) and a pond. The area is in a floodplain. Used to be farmland. Have been following the project for a couple of decades now. We were able to avoid destruction that would have happened with a westward turn in SmartTrack (see https://urbantoronto.ca/forum/threads/toronto-crosstown-line-5-west-extension-m-s-metrolinx.28144/post-1882860 for an example).

I am fine with the current plans from Scarlett Road to Weston Road. Wish that the portion from Scarlett Road to Martin Grove Road was on the surface or elevated, but with construction already started and Doug Ford as Il Duce, we have to go on.

Currently, trying to make sure that the roadway will have pedestrian entrances on each corner of the intersections for the underground section. Failing that, then pedestrian refugee islands, multi-stage crossings, and bioswales.

The elevated guideway will be fine. Concerns about “destrction” are quire overstated.

I am a bit more worried about how construction may interfere with use of the existing playground areas and soccer and cricket pitches…. one has to assume some amount of laydown areas and exclusion zones will be needed. ML has been evasive about this - perhaps understandably given that they haven’t selected a vendor yet so don’t know the detail.

In the longer term, the improved transit access to that green space is worth a little disruption, one just hopes it is managed with sensitivity.

The idea of ruining at grade elevated on the north side with grade separation over major streets with a cycles path beside made more sense back then compart today building of the extension. That idea was far cheaper and the line would open years ahead of the current timeline if it stays on track.

The elevated section to Mount Dennis is the right way as it will be out of the floodplain lands.

That was no issue as it would lead to the top the slop area west of Scarlet Rd where it then will run on the surface to Martin Grove under the original plans for the line. Now it will go into the portal of the underground section at Scarlet Rd.

This extension could had been up and running by 2024/25, not the current plan of 2029-31

Honestly if simcoe street in Oshawa can get an underground lrt in order to preserve those heritage houses than surely in Toronto which lacks parks we should be going underground here.

Toronto lacks parks? Out of all the ways to describe Toronto, lacking in parks should surely not be one of them.

There was another, much cheaper option on the table: running the tracks in the median of the road. The space exists for it - the intersection of Jane and Eglinton has a whopping SIX anes including turn lanes. The fact that Toronto didn't go with this option and is discussing whether elevated or tunnelling would have been the better solution sums up everything wrong with transit planning in this city.
