Mississauga’s Marilyn Munroe towers are well known for their curvy appeal.
A Dutch businessman and his Brampton partner are bringing the startling Mississauga towers to life in miniature form. The wee replicas of the two condominium towers (nicknamed because their silhouettes are reminiscent of the figure of the famous actress) are being built in a Mississauga warehouse as part of a display called ‘Our Home and Miniature Land.’
The life-size Marilyn Munroe towers are 589 feet tall (56 floors) and 529 feet high (50 floors) tall. Engineer Mark Domanski is using a scale of 1:120, which means the complete models will stand 58 and 53 inches. The model of the taller tower is complete. The other one will be finished shortly.
They are being built upward from a miniature version of the same floor plate that rotates at each floor level of the actual towers. It gives them their unique design.
The mini world is the brainchild of Oakville resident Jean-Louis Brenninkmeijer and Brampton engineer Dave MacLean. Brenninkmeijer, originally from The Netherlands and a member of a famously wealthy Dutch-German clan, is fulfilling a long-held dream to build a miniature world similar to tourist attractions Madurodam in Holland and Miniatur Wunderland in Germany.
“This is a hobby that I am turning into a business,” said Brenninkmeijer. “It is a lifelong passion.”
When complete, Brenninkmeijer and MacLean plan to move the huge display to an undetermined location in downtown Toronto and make it a major tourist attraction.
The Toronto part of the exhibit is about 2,000 square feet. The Hamilton portion is also about 2,000 square feet, and in between the two are several Mississauga landmarks. Currently under construction are exhibits for Niagara and Ottawa, with more cities to come.

Can you imagine the kind of exposure these towers would have given Toronto is they were located in Cityplace or South Core? Toronto is on the cusp of a tourism boom and the only missing element is striking, iconic architecture. Why can't the civic leaders get this through their thick heads? Just look at the brilliant new Toronto tourism ad. Image is everything these days, but the city mandarins seem completely oblivious to this fact. Sigh...
