Ongoing renovation work on the former Parkdale Theatre building at 1605 Queen St W. Looks like plans for improved interior retail spaces for antique vendors along with event venue space.

The Parkdale movie theater was constructed in 1920 by the Allen brothers who also built the Danforth Music Hall. This was their 4th theatre and by far the most opulent. In 1970 the theatre closed and the magnificent ceiling was covered up by a bland drop ceiling. in 2020, 100 years after its construction, the drop ceiling was taken down to reveal the one of a kind ceiling again and was restored. The Parkdale Hall is using this amazing space as the location for its brand new event venue. In addition to the grandiose ceiling, The Parkdale Hall will have a stage, bar, kitchen, and front and back patio. The Parkdale Hall had a soft opening on October 18th, 2020 where it debuted a new weekly antiques and collectibles market. Come by on Sunday to take a look at this antique ceiling and hunt for some treasures. To learn more about The Parkdale Hall follow them on Instagram and Facebook @Theparkdalehall.

Great to see this.

I always wanted to see this one restored.

Along with its eastern cousin:

Allenby Theatre

Now Playing

Circle K & Tim Hortons

It's a very fascinating hockey-themed romantic comedy featuring a lovely actress playing as Circle K and an athletic male actor playing the hockey player Tim Hortons (note the "s" at the end to differentiate from the real-life hockey player Tim Horton).

Historic Parkdale Hall could soon become a new live music venue

Nov 18, 2020

Swayed by the building’s history, Chan plans to bring the space closer to what it originally intended and devise a live performance venue.

“This could be a place of entertainment for people,” he says, “I may also make the space available for weddings and other events on the side, but my visions for it (after things come back online post-Covid) is a concert hall.”

It’s taken Chan and his crew months to restore the Parkdale Hall ceiling, but there’s still a ways to go before the space is concert-ready. Through research, Chan discovered that the theatre’s original design included an orchestra pit created to accompany the silent films that ruled 1920s screens.

Unfortunately, the orchestra pit wasn’t part of the space when Chan took over, but he is working on setting the hall up for great sound.

“We’re just starting our processes to treat the space for sound. I’ve been talking to sound technicians, specialists, and distributors, to see how we can best treat it for live music. Right now, the hall has lots of hard surfaces, which is not great for sound,” he says.

Right now, Parkdale Hall is home to The Parkdale Antiques and Collectibles Market — another nod of respect and preservation to the area’s history.
