Subway in Russia: Not all glamorous as they want you to thin

Check out these photos from the REAL Moscow subway:

Take a while to read some of the comments by hardcore russian fans who will defend their country tooth and nail, even saying that all these photos are fake, photoshopped, yadda yadda. One commentator posts a link to "govt' approved" photos of the Moscow subway.

Drinking really is a problem in Vodka... I mean Russia.:rolleyes

Thanks for the link.

I especially enjoyed the photos of sleeping people. Those vinyl seats in the trains and "clean" stone platform floors might look inviting for people to sleep on... nothing like the tight, newspaper covered seats and gum covered floors of the TTC.

Hmmm... possible disadvantage of perimeter seating: the ability to stretch out and snooze? In London perimeter seats have armrests making it impossible.

In response to the Moscow pics, they're great for a laugh but not really surprising IMO. The Moscow Metro is the busiest in the world (9 million pax a day, 3 billion a year on a system 1/3 smaller than London's) in a country that can certainly be ..."interesting" at times. Car ownership is low and the Metro is the lifeblood of the city. It's inevitable and I'm pleasantly amused that someone has taken the effort to document it.

Talk about a defensive transit rider:

Plenty of characters, nothing too out of the ordinary though. I'll be there in less than a week and the pictures (and the some of the comments too) simply reaffirm why I am excited about living in this city.

I haven't been to Moscow but I was in St. Petersburg last year. The Subways was cheap but confusing as hell with each subway entrance in each station named differently adding valuable seconds to the already lengthy amount of time I need to stand in front of Russian text to decifer it. The subway was reasonably clean and deep underground (like twice as deep as Montreal). I had no problems personally but petty crime and muggings were very promenant, as a foreigner you are as likely to get harassed or essentially scamed/mugged by security personal or police as the general public particularly if you are a visual minority which I qualify as. I essentially look eurasian which means I don't stick out too much although in the larger cities over 95 percent of people are ethnic russians.

The military and security presence is far greater then what we are used to, although the same could be said about western europe. There is military consciption and you sure as hell can't afford a car, or even the shirt on you back as a soldier so of course they're going to take the subway.
