We've heard of digital radio and digital pets. Now there's something called a digital sister city.
They're not quite sure what it means, but officials in Mayor David Miller's office say Toronto's top politician will take part this week in a "digital sister city signing" with Mayor Gavin Newsom of San Francisco.
Sister city deals have come under attack over the years from people who see them simply as a way for politicos to travel to exotic locales at taxpayer expense. Toronto has sister city relationships with several overseas municipalities, including Milan.
Officials in Toronto's economic development department couldn't be reached for comment, but the San Francisco deal is said to be the city's first "digital sister city" agreement.
According to the San Francisco city website, the city by the bay has digital deals with nine other municipalities around the world, including Singapore, Dusseldorf and Toronto, a city that the website says is led by "Lord Mayor David Miller."
The website says that goals of the digital sister city initiative include:
# Growing the digital media industry by encouraging greater integration of and investment in digital media companies located in sister cities.
# Developing joint educational programs and exchange opportunities between digital sister cities to prepare our students for the global future.
# Enhancing next-generation connectivity between digital sister cities.
"By creating the initiative, San Francisco positions itself to work in tandem with offshore partners around the world to produce more work more efficiently, allowing the City's digital media industry to grow," the city's website explains.
