Star: Stephen Hawking 'mulling' Waterloo move

Prometheus:

LHC is, first and foremost meant to track down Higgs boson; beyond that, it should be capable of generating and detecting certain low energy species of putative Supersymmetry particles, which would be great for physics beyond the Standard Model.

i know. i was just joking. i should have used a smiley :)

some people (people are stranglets, nobody remembers your name, when you're composed of strange quarks :p ) have speculated that when it starts up it could turn all the matter on earth into strange matter. it is truly fred phelps worst nightmare; the whole world goes queer, including himself. :D

hopefully they find that higgs boson, the god particle, named for peter higgs, an atheist or else brian flemming is gonna come out with a new documentary called "the god particle who wasn't there" ;)

The latest flavour of this fear is that LHC can get into the energy regime that would create black holes, which, some argue, will basically eat up the Earth. Of course (and we get back to Hawking here, since he is the first to delineate the physics) such tiny black holes will "evaporate" almost instantaneously and pose absolutely no threat whatsoever. Beyond that, cosmic rays already causes equally energetic collisions with Earth's atmosphere daily, and we are still here.

i've read a joke comment online that the LHC will destroy the whole universe and cause it collapse into its self (the big crunch), then cause another big bang and then 13.7 billion years later, some intelligent life form will construct another LHC and the whole process will repeat again over and over forever. :D

I think you're more than ready to read Greg Egan's Distress and entertain the whole notion of the Aleph Moment - not that the latter concept has ANY serious theoretical underpinnings to it.

what's the movement about?
