St. Marys, Ontario

St. Marys, often referred to as "Stonetown," is located on the Thames River north of
London. It was settled in the 1840s and boasts many beautiful 19th century limestone
structures.

Are these stone-type towns unique to Ontario (in a north american context at least)?

I would imagine that, like St. Mary's - which is built from locally-quarried limestone - towns all over the world that are located next to stone quarries and have derived their wealth from exploiting those resources generally incorporate them in their buildings.

Arthur Meighen, Shon Tron's all-time fave politician, is buried in St. Mary's! http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/8b/ArthurMeighenheadshot.jpg

Shur-gain? Cool. I always loved watching shur-gain trucks arrive at our farm growing up.

St Mary's--haven't been there in 20 years. Yikes. It was the "scenic route" from Stratford to London.

St Mary's was always split in two: the city snobs who moved out there and "ruined it", and the locals. Both factions were irritating.

Btw, Flar: Exceptional photos once again! Really love the First Baptist Church. (Reminds me of one of the small town Ontario churches I went to occasionally as a child--but wasn't a member of it. Similar setting into a slope, similar yellow brick and architecture. A wedding in a church like this would be cool, eh???)

St.Mary's,Ontario and its limestone construction...

Flar: Good photo tour of St.Mary's-there are so many nice buildings constructed there predominately of local limestone there are too many to name as well as some good brick construction also. I noticed the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in one pic-just another reason to go up and visit someday.

The limestone architecture reminds me of old Chicago buildings like the famous Water Tower-are there many quarries in that area? It seems that limestone is prevalent in and around the Great Lakes. LI MIKE

Thanks guys

I would have a hard time living in a small town like this, it's not too far from London though.

I wish I had time to go to the Baseball Hall of Fame while I was there.
