Recently received a promotional flyer in the mail that a new gym is opening up at 98 The Esplanade. Also walked by the site and indeed they are renovating the space and they have a small 'temporary' workout area till their renovations are complete.

Timing works for me since my current gym membership is set to expire.

However...

Just looking up on Red Deals and found a lot of negative experiences with the gym at other locations, with difficulties cancelling and overcharging and dealing with management..

It's too bad since the St Lawrence area is in much need of a nice gym. I find Condo gyms just inadequate..

Will give the community centres a try, as suggested in another thread..

EDIT: Sorry this might be the wrong thread to post to..Didn't want to create another retail thread for St Lawrence.. Mods, if you want to move this please feel free..

Beaconer, those redflagdeals threads about the new gym sound pretty dodgy. I don't know if I'd be giving them a credit card number. Shame, really, because I was very happy to see that poor abandoned space being used for something for the first time since Mike Bullard was being filmed (shudder).

There is actually another gym at the far end of the Esplanade, in Berkeley Castle, called Area Fitness. It's been in there for about a year. Looks nice enough from the outside, though I know nothing about gyms so I can't speak for the quality of their equipment. http://www.areaonline.ca

Thanks PukeGreen.

I had a membership at that gym before it was Area, it was called Fit for Living. It shut down and then they transferred the membership to the Waterside Tennis Club on Queens Quay and Sherbourne, and then they shut down due to the construction of Sherbourne Park (the owners wanted to stay).

The Fit for Living gym/space was subdivided when it closed, and it looks like Area is in a much smaller space with older left over equipment.

I've also tried the Berkeley Gym but found it lacking as well.

Yeah, it appears that Wynn is using the same rip off/sales tactic they used in their other locations, getting people to sign up before the gym is even built, giving them access to a small 'sample' gym. FYI, their temporary/sample gym space is on Colborne street.
