"Squeezed in" subway ad angers passengers

Fri Feb 15, 11:07 AM ET

BEIJING (Reuters) - An advertisement on Beijing's subway proclaiming "Squeezed in?! Go and buy a car then!" has angered passengers who said it only encourages traffic jams, a state newspaper said Friday.

The advertisement, written in large white letters on a red background, is also contrary to the Beijing city government's aim of getting more people to take public transport, the official Beijing Daily said.

"Isn't this out of tune with environmental protection?" it quoted a subway passenger surnamed Yang as saying.

"The company sees subway passengers as potential customers, but the scornful tone of the advertising language exposes a lack of interest in human feelings behind a meticulous design," a female passenger surnamed Liu added.

Some Internet users have come up with their own versions of the advertisement's slogan, the newspaper said, proposing: "Stuck in a traffic jam? Then take the subway!."

But the storm of criticism against the advert, which does not identify the company or organization behind it, may have just the effect the advertisers were looking for, the report added.

"If they only cared about getting eyeballs rather than the impact it would have on people and society, has it not been effective?" the newspaper quoted unnamed experts as saying.

Beijing is spending billions of dollars expanding and upgrading its subway network ahead of this year's Olympic Games, and wants to encourage more people to take trains and buses to help deal with worsening road congestion.

The ad in question

The same issue could arguably be said for the TTC, which is promoting the Auto Show.

Reminds me of the first time I witnessed Zanta terrorizing an innocent subway train.

This is nothing new. It just reflects the mindset of most people, here and now in China, apparently: cars are for successful people, and only poor people and losers take public transit.

I was irked a few months ago when that new Ontario "street racing" law came into effect and the cops were warning speeding drivers with the phrase: "get out your bus pass!" (http://www.thestar.com/printArticle/261595)

I was not particularly pleased to realize that the form of transit I voluntarily choose to use to get around on (occasionally, anyway) is now considered a "punishment" for people who break the law and recklessly endanger lives.

Just another example of how far we need to go.

well said, PukeGreen -- though the reality is, for most suburban kids, the bus is punishment.

For us downtown/urban folk who have more convenient transit and it becomes a choice, we laugh at our suburban brethren and see them as chumps for having to spend 3 hours stuck on the freeway and paying $300 a month to park. We see cars as punishment.

It goes both ways.

Funny thing is, my mama tells me that I should beware of the kinds of creeps and weirdos who might drive up to me in their Chevy Cavalier VL Sedans and ask for directions

Oh, and anyone find it weird that bus has a bike rack up front?

Mmm, if a chump is going to be stuck, it'll be more like 3 hours stuck on the TTC...

Automobile ads putting down public transit...

Everyone: I remember that GM ad myself-in some areas public transit users are definitely looked down upon as people that are too poor to afford cars-it is different living in the NYC area-where there is significant transit ridership
compared to smaller cities and areas where the mindset is different.

I feel that transportation should be balanced for all-like probably many UT members feel-instead of being slanted mostly one way towards the automobile which is the way that most of North America has turned out to be. I feel that drivers-especially in cities like Toronto-should understand how bad things would be without the TTC or GO-traffic might reach unbearable status. Comments by LI MIKE

No. Both the bike rack and paint scheme make me wonder if this bus isn't a GRT (Kitchener-Waterloo) transit bus?

Heck, there's even a route 23 Idlewood in Kitchener: http://www.grt.ca/web/transit.nsf/5f22897663adffc585256e5a005c53df/F0BD881589B2609585256C1E0047D8E1/$file/Rt23_Sept04_07.pdf?openelement

Bonus: setting looks like K-W. Double bonus: GRT buses are filled with Creeps and Weirdos!

Mystery solved?

And, Chevy Cavaliers are popular in K-W!

Speak for yourself! I choose to live an urban lifestyle with local stores, parks, restaurants, gym, and shopping, and even a subway station within walking distance. But when it comes to trips outside of my 2 km walking radius, I'll drive, opting to not purchase an over priced metropass or spend $2.25 to travel 3 subway stations. The only exception is that I often take the subway to work, and use it when alcohol is involved.

According to the last census, the majority of inner city residents drive for most of their trips. Is that good? No. However the TTC is still slow and when you're considering downtown, there is likely poorer transit service today than there was just after the Bloor line opened up.

it is if you live near a subway line out of downtown..
