Roads: Ontario/GTA Highways Discussion

probably construction start of phase 2. Location 1 is the current end of phase 1 and location 2 is where the interchange with Highway 35 will be.
 
It's worth noting that the official 407 East site has been updated to reference the 412 (former West Durham Link) and 418 (East Durham Link) numbers, and makes it makes it completely clear that 412 and 418 will be toll highways. I know most on here are aware of that but if you've been looking for an official reference to point people towards, this site covers it.
 
Provincial government is in Sault Ste Marie tomorrow to make an announcement about their $31.5 billion infrastructure fund..

Similar to the 407, a P3 constructed toll highway in Quebec that is now privately operated has turned out to be have shoddy construction, and is missing promised design elements. One city through which it runs has resorted to suing the contractors, the operator, and the Quebec government to cover the costs of paying for the upgrades to meet specified design standard.

I've driven A30 as a way to bypass Montreal when heading east from Ottawa (as opposed to taking A40 or A20 through Montreal). It isn't really a toll highway, it's more of a toll bridge on a highway. There's only 1 toll, and it's to cross over the St. Lawrence. If you're just driving the highway on the South Shore, it's free.
 
And a good toll-free alternative to avoid both the Montreal Island traffic and the tolls on Autoroute 30 is take Route 201 from Highway 401/Autoroute 20, then A-530 to A-30.

You'd hit about the same number of traffic signals as you would taking A-20 right across.

Ah, that's a good suggestion. The 201 was never the slow piece of taking that route! The only toll is on the bridge then!
 
It hasn't really been mentioned here yet, but Highway 7 between Kitchener and Guelph has officially started construction this summer. It'll take about 4 years to build. For fun, here's the interchange planned with highway 85.

They seem to have made it rather difficult to get from Highway 7 to Riverbend Avenue. And they are missing the opportunity to reconnect River Street to Bridgeport. I guess the NIMBYs win.
 
Not NIMBYism at all. Riverbend and Shirley are commercial/industrial areas.
If you compare it to the existing road network, this actually improves a lot of the road connectivity in that part of town.

Unless you want to drive to Riverbend from the existing expressway portion of 7 - which many do, to get to work. Even other trips have been complicated. Wellington to Riverbend now has you double-back. 85 to Victoria Mall now requires you to come off at Wellington instead, and wait on a traffic light, to get to the ramp to Victoria. The original plan that Wellington turn into the expressway to Guelph seems to have been completely complicated.

I heard comments years ago with NIMBY elements not wanting Wellington to connect easily to the expressway, despite the original design. Sure looks like they've one to me ...
