Roads: Ambassador & Gordie Howe Bridges

Nothing to do with tolls or politics, but has the MTO reconfigured the lanes at the 401/Huron Church interchange yet? The current/old provisional setup had the through lanes going to Huron Church, with a left exit to continue onto the 401 stub.

Last time I was at this exit (late summer 2025), all the lanes and everything are painted- the signs are ready to go too- they just have a temporary sign on top and some pylons directing the 'mainline' 401 traffic to Huron Church. I assume once an opening date is announced, it should relatively easy for the MTO to reconfigure the 401 towards Gordie Howe. They might temporarily block off a lane or two if they need to do any touch-up work with road paint and the like, but probably nothing more than a week or two of staggered work.

I suspect we will get an opening date within the next month or so, assuming Trump doesn't actually block opening. A lot of his recent threats to Canada have not resulted in follow-through, and this is one of the silliest of his threats, so I'd hope it will proceed. I could see mid- to late-april.

The latest flyover from Bob Jones shows that crews have mostly demobilized from the entire site and that the temporary crossing facility set up at the base of the bridge to manage construction traffic being dismantled - they are definitely cleaning up and ramping for opening:

From his video you can see lane painting on the 401 is complete:

A minor bit of work still happening on the expansion joint - this seems to be laggard of construction on the bridge:

Canadian customs has been cleaned up with the temporary crossing facility mostly de-assembled minus the construction trailer:

Surprise, surprise, surprise... not really.

Busy Ontario U.S. border bridge slashes toll prices in half

From https://www.blogto.com/travel/2026/04/ontario-us-border-bridge-slashes-tolls/

The famous Ambassador Bridge is about to cut tolls by nearly 50 per cent as the aging border crossing between Ontario and Michigan prepares to face new competition amid declining cross-border traffic.

The Ambassador Bridge has connected Windsor and Detroit for almost a century, but the aging bridge will soon face competition from the new Gordie Howe International Bridge — a direct link between Ontario's Highway 401 and Michigan's I-75 that will cut travel times and bypass both cities' busy downtowns.

Between the new competing bridge expected to open this spring and the continued decline of Canada-U.S. trade and tourism, the bridge's operators have opted to cut tolls almost in half, in an apparent bid to keep the nearly 100-year-old crossing relevant.

Starting this Sunday, April 19, the cheapest crossing toll for cars and motorcycles equipped with the Ambassador Bridge's Premier Pass will cost USD$5.50 (CAD $7.50), falling from the USD$10 (CAD$14) rate, while cash rates and vehicles not equipped with Premier Pass will remain at the current rate.

The updated rates could be interpreted as a direct response to the recently announced toll rates for the Gordie Howe International Bridge. The new crossing, expected to open on a yet-to-be-announced date this spring, will charge just USD$4.35 (CAD$6) for vehicles using its pre-paid "Breakaway" membership program, or USD$5.75 (CAD$8) for vehicles not signed up to Breakaway.

Previously ranked as the top trade crossing on the entire continent, the ongoing U.S.-Canada trade war and a decline in tourism have cut into the bottom line of border crossings all along the countries' approximately 8,900-kilometre frontier.

The Blue Water Bridge in Sarnia overtook the Ambassador Bridge as the continent's busiest point for cross-border trade in 2025, and the latter's position as a major commercial trucking route is further threatened by the imminent opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge.
It's a shift in traffic that, even before the current breakdown in Canada-U.S. relations, was treated as an existential threat by the Ambassador Bridge's former owner, late billionaire Manuel "Matty" Moroun.

The Moroun family fought hard to thwart the Gordie Howe International Bridge on the basis that it deprived them of their "exclusive right" to basically print money on border crossings.

After multiple lawsuits and failed bids to stop the project in its tracks, the Moroun family was ultimately unable to prevent its construction.

With the Gordie Howe International Bridge's opening now imminent, the Ambassador Bridge's operators were seemingly left with no choice but to slash rates as their effective monopoly on

Surprise indeed. I'm seriously worried about the Ambassador Bridge collapsing...

Hopefully the Moro(u)ns don't bomb it themselves, because at it's age it proves to be too high-liability and too costly to repair.

I've honestly never been this anti-American government, not anti-American in my life.

Howard Lutnick who owned 11 E. 71 St. gained everything from Trump's failed tariff war. He couldn't hide his smirk. Meanwhile, his 658 employees and younger brother died in the WTC attacks on floors 101-5, while happening to be out of office with his kid.

Epstein owned 9 E. 71 St. (Herbert N. Straus House) and sold 11 to Lutnick for $10.

For anyone desiring transiting over the Ambassador, I'd be very wary of a false flag.

Use Sarnia or the Tunnel...

A podcast I listen to did a lengthy episode about the Ambassador Bridge today

Interesting podcast, always like podcast recommendations. I found this one had too much sarcasm to enjoy consistently, and I had to skip around a bit, but I did like the focused look on an infrastructure project.

They didn't seem to get the tolling situation right on the Gordie Howe I don't think. As I understand it, all tolling will be done on the Canadian side, but for cars in both directions. They seemed to imply that only cars coming from Canada would be tolled, which isn't true Aka, US car owners wouldn't have to pay to cross from the US. US cars will be tolled the same as Canadian cars, once they reach Windsor I think. You pay in either direction, just collected from Canada's side in both cases.

Gordie Howe bridge opening date being ‘quietly’ negotiated to avoid angering Trump: source

From https://www.ctvnews.ca/business/article/gordie-howe-bridge-opening-date-being-quietly-negotiated-to-avoid-angering-trump-source/

The opening date of the new bridge linking Canada and the U.S. is being quietly negotiated to let the criticism around it die down, according to an American source familiar with talks.

The source tells CTV News both sides are trying not to do anything that would “trigger the kooks and crackpots” around U.S. President Donald Trump, who has threatened to block the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge on the American side.

CTV News isn’t naming the source, because they were not authorized to speak about the discussions over the opening of the bridge. However, they say it has been a big collective effort on both sides of the border.
Officials representing the Crown corporation in charge of the new span continue to say the bridge is expected to open in the spring of 2026, without giving an exact date.

“It’s just the reality of building new technology and new built infrastructure,” said Heather Grondin, chief relations officer for the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority.

“We have to make some adjustments that we need to retest or recalibrate, and across this whole system, that ranges from things like our tolling system, our traffic management centre, the esthetic lights that people are seeing on the bridge”.

Questions over when the bridge would open have persisted for the last two months as construction wrapped up, but the threats ramped up from Washington, D.C.
In a Feb. 9 post on Truth Social, U.S. President Donald Trump complained that Canada wasn’t treating the U.S. fairly when it came to trade, and he went on a lengthy tirade, including the construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge as part of his grievance.
Pointing out Canada owns both sides of the bridge in both countries, Trump wrote, “I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve”.

In the post, Trump complained about Canada’s supply-managed dairy sector, the removal of American spirits from Ontario-run liquor stores and the apparent lack of U.S. content in the Canadian-built Gordie Howe International bridge.

CTV News reached out to the Canadian government to ask if Trump’s threat is affecting the announcement of the opening date of the $6.4-billion bridge.
In a statement, the department of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada said progress is being made towards the opening of the bridge this spring.

“The exact opening date depends on the completion of the ongoing quality reviews and testing and commissioning activities,” wrote Caleb Spassov from the department. “Updates will be provided as that information is available”.

While officials refuse to provide a clearer picture of exactly when the span will open to vehicle and pedestrian traffic, there are indications it could happen soon.

The toll discount program for the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which has been aptly named “Breakaway,” is seeing brisk sales.

“We’ve had over 5,000 accounts opened and over 12,000 transponders ordered through that process,” said Grondin. “We expect more to come as we announce an opening date.”

The Maroun owners of the Ambassador Bridge will probably challenge the tolls next, at both Gordie Howe and Blue Water, as being "punitive" or "unfair to private business" or some such thing. I think when someone has basically been printing money for more than 4 decades using bridge tolls and fuel revenue, they probably have a war chest set aside for legal battles.
