LONDON — Syd Barrett, the troubled genius who co-founded Pink Floyd but spent his last years in reclusive anonymity, has died, a spokeswoman for the band said Tuesday. He was 60.
The spokeswoman — who declined to give her name until the band made an official announcement — confirmed media reports that he had died. She said Barrett died several days ago, but she did not disclose the cause of death. Barrett had suffered from diabetes for many years.

Barrett co-founded Pink Floyd in 1965 with Roger Waters and Nick Mason, and wrote many of the band’s early songs. The group’s jazz-infused rock made them darlings of the London psychedelic scene, and the 1967 album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn — largely written by Barrett, who also played guitar — was a commercial and critical hit.

However, Barrett suffered from mental instability, exacerbated by his use of LSD. His behavior grew increasingly erratic, and he left the group in 1968 — five years before the release of Pink Floyd’s most popular album, Dark Side of the Moon. He was replaced by David Gilmour.

Barrett released two solo albums — The Madcap Laughs and Barrett — but soon withdrew from the music business altogether.

He spent much of the rest of his life living quietly in his hometown of Cambridge, England, where he was a familiar figure, often seen cycling or walking to the corner store.

Despite his brief career, Barrett’s fragile, wistful songs influenced many musicians, from David Bowie — who covered the Barrett track “See Emily Play†— to the other members of Pink Floyd, who recorded the album Wish You Were Here as a tribute to their troubled bandmate.

The band spokeswoman said a small, private funeral would be held.

Gonna have to listen to WYWH again tonight...

No you should listen to Pipers At The Gates Of Dawn. That's Syd's record.

I'll do that too. WYWH seems somehow appopriate as well, IMO

What did Syd have to do with The Wall or WYWH beyond some inspiration? The first two are the only ones that count.

Not to mention solo Syd. (Small world; she who wrote that AP article was formerly a theatre critic for NOW.)

Oh, and for some reason, I'm almost anticipating andreapalladio to bounce into this thread sneering at Syd "whodat?" Barrett and his fanbase...

Hmmm, a bit of a surprise. 'See Emily Play' is British psychedelia at its best. RIP Syd.

Ed: I know my Floyd.

Re: WYWH - the title track and "Shine On" were written about Syd, and the album very much a tribute to him. Ironically, while that album was written and recorded, Barrett made a surprise visit to the studio - so it was more than just some inspriation. That's why I consider it appropriate even though Barrett never actually contributed to it - or anything after 'A Saucerful of Secrets' - and would not consider DSOTM or the Wall or anything else to be so.

Wikipedia - WYWH

I agree, 'See Emily Play' was a great piece of British psychedelia, and so is "Astronomy Domine" and "Arnold Layne".

Sean I know my Floyd as well and know the story behind WYWH. The early ones are still the way to pay tribute to him.

What's wrong with paying tribute by listening to a tribute? First thing I did when I heard was listen to 'Bike' a couple of times :) I love the symphony of ducks at the end...

'Bike' is still him. In fact that's his epitaph. Finished at 22, dead at 60.

Someone should put together a band from the remaindered old farts from all these British 1960's bands, and send them on tour. Old ex-Beatles, Moody Blues, Herman's Hermits, Kinks or whatever. All the drug-addled refuse from the era that refuses to die.

Start the thing off with a big bang at the Dominion Club.

Maybe Mark Burnett can use that for next summer's show: Rockstar Old Farts.

No, wait. He's doing that this summer already.

They could do a fundraising concert for the Jane Pitfield campaign.
