Can anyone recommend a good place for a light dinner in downtown for a visitor from New York? I'd like to be able to point him somewhere Toronto-style that's chic without being too pricy.

It's slightly out of downtown, but Weezie's at Power St (just east of Parliament) & King St E fits your description.

Yes. Head over to Queen and Bathurst area for your choice cuisine: French at the Rosebud ( http://www.therosebud.ca/ ). Italian at Terroni. Tex-Mex at La Hacienda. Czehoski: http://www.czehoski.com/

Iranian at Banu: http://www.banu.ca/

Or head further west to Odd Fellows at Queen and Shaw: http://www.oddfellows.ca/ (featuring a stunning designer interior/communal table), the Drake at Queen and Beaconsfield, the Gladstone at Queen and Gladstone etc. Further west along Queen, in Parkdale, the Social's Richard and Jesse are opening a new restaurant/pub nextdoor to carnivore fave Cowbell ( http://www.cowbellrestaurant.ca/ ) called Parts and Labour: http://www.martiniboys.com/Toronto/club-news-1252-Parts-and-Labour.html .

Or head to Ossington and Queen area for Toronto's latest trendy restaurant strip: Amazing pizza at Pizzeria Libretto, gorgeous French cuisine at Union, and the latest designer restaurant opening soon: Bohmer.

All these restaurants are within a 10 minute cab ride of downtown Bay Street area, and all these restaurants are much more affordable than Bay Street area joints.
