This was a mistake for the Dems. We're 13 months away from the election result, with strong likliehood of Trump's defeat. What's to be gained by pursuing impeachment when the Senate won't convict?

One of the reader comments on the NYT today played it out....

Unfortunately, this is how it plays out

1. The House investigates and votes to impeach Trump
2. The Senate predictably does not reach the 67 votes needed to convict.
3. During the Impeachment process Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity and Trump himself say the words "Biden, corruption, Ukraine" 7,435,030 times.
4. Biden loses the nomination to Trump's preferred candidate Elizabeth Warren
5. Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity and Trump himself say "Radical Harvard socialist Elizabeth Warren" 7,435,030 times.

6. Trump re-elected.
The impeachment process will keep the bad news about Trump being heard, without the Democrats having to pay for negative commercials about the Republicans.

That's not how it works with Trump. The more bad news, the more electable he becomes. Trump said it himself, he could shoot someone and still win.

Trump becoming leader and president and destroying the Republican Party was the greatest gift to the Democrats but they still had to throw it away. I think impeachment only legitimizes Trump. Just let the people decide Trump's fate instead of giving any credence to the "deep state."

No. This is the moment of truth for the United States to consider what kind of lawful society the nation wills to be. A lot of us in the ROW remain in bemusement.

I believe either Biden will squeak by a """win""" via superdelegates, or Warren will get the nomination.

Biden's campaign is already damaged by Hunter Biden's connections to China/Ukraine, and Sanders isn't looking too good for health (best of luck for him).

What's wrong with Sanders health?

The US is at a fork in the road. Either rule of law matters. Or is doesn't. And the US eventually becomes a banana republic when the Democrats come around to doing equally unethical and criminal acts out of frustration.

When it comes to the Democratic primary, I am always struck by how much these candidates are setting up their supporters for disappointment. Thanks to Trump, they have trillion dollar deficits. They are going to close that and have new spending without massive tax increases?

I love this article that quotes a Republican strategist who compares Trump to a suicide bomber about to destroy the GOP:

Rick Wilson has a way with words - I definitely recommend following him on Twitter if you're on it. He was one of the GOPers ended up at the receiving end of the horde for not pledging fealty.
