Our Streets - Front Street

So keeping with the theme, I took a walk along the former shoreline of Toronto. One thing I noticed was that even early in the morning, there are lots of people on the sidewalks. The St. Lawrence area is bustling with people going to work and getting coffee at the many coffee shops.

The eastern part of Front is still underdeveloped with remanents of Toronto's industry. However, I can really see it turning around with the West Donlands being built. And of course the Distillery is a great example of what can happen in the future.

The old Canary Restaurant looks pretty desolate. I hope the sign at least can be preserved somehow.

What happened here with the street lighting?

On one side you have the generic lamp style, thankfully not mixed with the alternate straighter lamp like on some streets. On the other side there's a more attractive design. Is this due to it being a work in progress, bureaucracy, or a lack of funds?

The cost of the newer, more attractive light standards may have been secured from the developers of the adjacent parcels, and the City has not yet had the chance to replace the older standards. Just guessing.

Those ones on the south side were put in by City Place. There were old school ones there before City Place was built.

This building, and the old Railway Police building just north of it will be preserved in the West Don Lands plan. (Cherry Street will 'bulge' a bit to the west there when it gets widened. Not sure about the Canary sign, though I agree it SHOULD be saved.

I think Front St between the Sony Centre and St. Lawrence Market is one of my favourite streetscapes in the city. I just love those old 3-5 storey buildings.

Smuncky: I agree with you about that old Canary sign-it should be at least saved-where exactly on Front Street is it? The old lightpoles in pic #2 is to me absolutely Toronto-it seems there are many left and do some still have incandescent bulbs in them? You caught a little of everything from GO trains to neat Downtown buildings like Royal Bank-one of my personal favorites.

SE corner of Front and Cherry streets. As noted above, the BUILDING itself will certainly be saved. It is on the City's list of historic buildings and described as: "Palace Street School, 1859, Joseph Sheard, architect; 1869 addition, William Irving, architect; 1890, addition for D'Arcy Hotel, David Roberts Jr., architect; 1891, addition completed by Sproatt and Rolph, architects; 1906, became Cherry Street Hotel -adopted by City Council on August 18, 1976 " (Palace Street was the old name of Front Street.)
