Ontario Northland/Northern Ontario Transportation

One wonders what the ONR planners are thinking now that some VIA Ventures are running with F40s at one end. Might need more than two APCUs up there soon...
Maybe they can restore one of these. [Train enthusiast post. Completely unrealistic] cc @crs1026

I imagine they hoping (praying?) that VIA and/of Siemens come up with a fix. I don't know the foundations of the unreliability and to what extent it is cold related. It sounds to my uneducated brain that it is a reliability problem, not an electrical capacity problem. The Northlander will only be a 3-car set. It might even be a communication/connection problem rather than a generation problem.

Maybe Lucas Electrics had the contract (anybody who has owned/worked on British vehicles will get it). 🤣

Doug Bardeau at groups.io posted the 2010 Northlander schedule. Here's the southbound:

Dep Cochrane 0720, Porquis Jct 0820, Matheson 0855, North Bay 1355, Washago 1630, arr Toronto 1915.
Shuttle Timmins 0745 South Porcupine 0755 Matheson 0840.

So it's likely that there will be two or more non-revenue hours South Porcupine-Cochrane and v/v every day, and a slower trip (55 mins "Timmins">Matheson rail, 55 mins Timmins>Matheson bus)

Hope the votes are worth it.

Are there any concerns regarding the Siemens Charger's ability to handle the cold weather of Northern Ontario? Both Amtrak and VIA have had issues with their Charger's in cold weather. These Siemens Chargers will experience some of the coldest weather in Northern Ontario.
They took two VIA simens sets and tested them in the north. They both crapped out and CN had to tow them.

Seeing that they added F40'S to the VIA sets it's not looking good.

Oh boy... not good.

Does Siemens need to design a separate Charger model that can handle colder temperatures?

It’s not intended as the cottager express.

Is ONR going to have to introduce 3rd class “poor cars” to accommodate those riding past the millionaire retreats, into, well, the northlands?

What?

First, it is ONR. Not sure what L is.

Second, it sounds like there are 2 classes Economy and Business.

You’re thinking of the former TEE trainsets. Yes, a locomotive and a coach remain, rotting away in Northern Ontario. See here.
The rotting TEE coaches in North Bay are here (Google Maps link):

The preserved TEE sets have been repainted to TEE colours, except one cab car which is repainted to Northlander colours. Here they are being relocated to an undisclosed location in Leek, Netherlands:
Press release on the relocation (in Dutch):
