How Old City Hall can be Toronto’s new heart

Small excerpt (paywall):

Mr. McClelland envisions a mix of art and commerce, much like the Distillery District or the complex at 401 Richmond. In each case, old industrial bones were given new, creative blood.

He sees Old City Hall the same way. Imagine the cavernous front foyer reimagined as a restaurant and co-working space; upstairs, courtrooms and chambers house a messy, vibrant ecosystem of printmakers, tech startups and rehearsal spaces. A museum of Toronto, which the city hopes to launch in this building, could emerge through a series of tactical displays and grow from there.

Honestly love this.

I have fallen victim many times to the idea that every place needs to be something in order to be a destination - a big store or tourist attraction or museum or gallery. And it inevitably takes years of planning and lots of money to turn places into that something.

But I've come to realize that places can just be. And those are often the best places.

I think the Distillery District is a good example of this actually. I love going there, but never for the stores. I go there just to walk around, to see, to be in a beautiful place.

It's something Toronto doesn't have nearly enough of.
