New-look Toronto Star

I'm not too fond of it. Seems like a step back IMO. I think the Post still has the best layout and overall design of the major papers.

the star doesn't have to impress me with its looks. i go there for the content.

You know, though, on Saturday mornings we get the Globe, the Post and the Star delivered to our door (just the Globe the rest of the week). You'd think that the Star would have the best local news, but it's a distant third behind the Globe and the Post. The Star is a little better during the week, but no so much so that I would ever say that local news is one of its strengths.

I am not too thrilled by the Star redesign, either. Nor do I like the Globe redo. It looks like an attempt at content reduction.

I'm a daily Globe reader and I actually feel that the content, if anything, has increased, at least during the weekday editions, as a result of the re-design. They have added a whole new daily section M-F, with a daily theme (ex. Food, Relationships, etc) while not decreasing any of their previous content.

Interesting to compare that to the Star, which has eliminated its daily themed sections (Food, Fashion, etc) and replaced them all with a daily "Living" section. A mistake on the Star's part, IMO. The wide range of topics that is expected to fit under this one tent doesn't seem right to me. I like the daily entertainment sections all being called "Entertainment" now, though.

I liked the GTA section, though I often felt that it could have used a bit more content. It was usually the section I grabbed first. It made the paper seem both more local and more national at the same time (because the main section didn't deal with issues of only local interest). Now its been rolled in with the main news section and the comment section has been split off ("Ideas"). Comment was never usually more than 3 pages in the old Star design, so I can picture them really reaching to try and fill a whole section with content. See the idiotic Vancouver vs. Toronto article I posted in Toronto Issues as an example; that was from the new section.

Design-wise, I should give it a bit more time to form a final opinion. Initial impressions reminds me of a local paper like the St Catharines Standard down here rather than a paper of national importance. The Globe redesign didn't give me the same impression, it still looks very professional and reminds me of The Guardian.

I haven't wrapped my head around it all yet, but so far, I'm not that pleased with it. It's basically the same old Star, but something seems a bit too pedestrian about the whole thing.

I don't love the fonts for the headings (reminds me of the Ottawa Citizen), but I do like the consolidation of the lifestyle sections' names, and the separate section for world news.

if anyone would like a free subscription to the star, get in touch with me (personal message). you can try it for 2-4 weeks, then cancel and it will not cost you a penny in the end.
