New documentary featuring many abandoned Toronto buildings

Hello, this is my first visit to this forum, I'm so glad I've discovered it, this city and all of its little secrets are an obsession of mine. I'm a documentary filmmaker, and I've just completed a project called "Echoes of Forgotten Places" which deals with industrial archaeology and urban exploration. You can learn all about it here:

www.scribblemedia.com/echoes.html

About 90% of it was shot in some amazing T.O. locations like the Hearn power plant, the Wychwood carbarns, the Don Valley Brickworks, some old factories in the Liberty Street area and even in some storm drains.

The DVD is available at Suspect Video, Ballenford Books, Pages, This Ain't the Rosedale Library, David Mirvish Books on Art, and for those in Montreal, the Canadian Centre for Architecture will soon be carrying it. You can also get copies online through the link above.

Sorry about the shameless plug, but I think anyone interested in Toronto would really enjoy it...

Welcome and thanks for letting us know about your project - it sounded very fascinating (and very much related to what we talk about on here).

Shamless plug or not it looks very interesting. I will have to look for it next time I am the CCA. And feel free to ramble on endlessly about the subject and maybe drop the names of any books and resources that others might find interesting.

Re: New documentary featuring many abandoned Toronto buildin

I'll start by refering you to a site by a really great Toronto photographer whose work is featured on the DVD, his gallery section has some great images from many choice T.O. locations:

It could be a few weeks before the CCA has the DVD, I'm shipping them out on Monday...

Re: New documentary featuring many abandoned Toronto buildin

What is it about abandoned and derelict buildings that is so appealing? I always want to peak inside, so clearly this is a DVD for me.

Re: New documentary featuring many abandoned Toronto buildin

I've had lots of Mac users complain that they could not download the preview clip, I've included a link for the MS Windows Media Player for MAC OS for all you Apple die-hards!

Hey Scribble !

I happened to know scribble from another forum... I have seen this documentary and it is awesome ! I happen to also partake in urban exploration of abandoned buildings when I can find the time. and the documentary really captured the feeling.

Well done !

Welcome Roadwolf!

Are you on the UER?

Re: New documentary featuring many abandoned Toronto buildin

Indeed. I am on many forums, lol

but I post my photos here now: roadwolf.deviantart.com

I used to post them on UER tho.

Re: New documentary featuring many abandoned Toronto buildin

I've been seeing your posters everywhere - in front of my house on Dupont, in Cabbagetown. I'll post about it on the Spacing wire.

Re: New documentary featuring many abandoned Toronto buildin

Thanks for the post on spacing Shawn, apparently someone on staff there is going to review it for the next issue...

Re: New documentary featuring many abandoned Toronto buildin

I always wondered when there'd be an obvious crossover between here and UER...

I have Scribble's DVD, and it is indeed interesting. It amazes me that he manages to capture the atmosphere of being in these locations as when I watch the DVD it reminds me of times I've visited the places and the feelings I got rather than just a general glimpse of the building you often get from pictures.
