Toronto and the GTA are both set to get new telephone area codes next month.

Toronto phone numbers will soon start with 437, alongside 416 and 647. In the areas currently served by 905 and 289, residents will be assigned numbers starting with 365. The new area codes will be active as of March 25, but the existing ones will continue to be assigned until none are left.

“Increasing demand for telephone numbers, particularly for wireless devices, has created the need for additional numbers to serve customers in these regions,†the Telecommunications Alliance, a coalition of phone service providers, said in a news release Wednesday.

.....

With all the new area codes popping up every few years, one wonders how much longer it will take until we adopt 10 digit phone numbers with a regional 3-digit area code. Say 416 was assigned to the entire Southern Ontario region, your number would be (416)555-555-5555. The amount of digits seems excessive but then again so does the current number of existing area codes.

More like 4 digit area codes since the North American 3 digit codes are projected to run out by 2015.

Or, perhaps, the end to sharing of a country code between Canada and the US. Historically, we could lay claim to the "1" but their national ego may get in the way of that....maybe we should be shopping/planning for a new country code....is "99" available?

won't happen in 100 years.
The entire southern Ontario has something like 12M people, hardly a very large one even if it were one city. Cities with twice as many people manage with only 8 digits. I would say 7 digits digits will suffice for the entire southern Ontario if it had the same area code.

If the overall system that includes the Carribbean changes to 4 digit area codes in a couple of years, it would affect everyone.

How am I ever going to recognize telemarketers circumventing the "Do Not Call List".

I take calls from area codes I recognize as those where friends and family live, ignore the rest.
Maybe time to cancel the home phone...

The new area codes will allow people (and companies) to use the same last four digits of the telephone. Easier to remember that my home phone is 416-555-xxxx, my cell phone number is 647-555-xxxx, and now my kid's phone can be 437-555-xxxx.

When I got my first cell phone, I asked for the same last four digits as my phone number. When my relatives and friends found out, they in turn did the same.

I could go get cell phones for my other kids in a 905 area store and try to get 905-555-xxxx, 289-555-xxxx, and now 365-555-xxxx, as well (if lucky).

That is, or seems, cool.....you may want to way it against potential long distance costs. There are places within the GTA which I won't call from my home phone (905) but will call from my cell phone (416) because of long distance charges.....some of the places are closer to my home than if I was actually sitting in the "416"
