Thanks MatinMtl.

Of the two, Barcelona, in Catalonia, is what I take the greatest pleasure in seeing again. That is no slight to a beautiful Madrid, just a personal note.

Your nod to Antoni Gaudí's unfinished Sagrada Família is almost mandatory. But I wish we could have seen more of what looks to my eye like the roof of Gaudí's Casa Milà. You have a beautiful view of the plaza, however, and I seem to recall a plaza near Port Barcelona, that is especially grand - a great companion to your plaza shot.

Everytime I think of this particular city, there is also the recollection of the furnace that is known as summer in Barcelona. This forced me, over the years, to learn how to better photograph at night, keeping the shutter open on stationary objects, and finding the best lit areas to take most of my souvenir shots. Now I just buy postal cards, or a coffee table book, to update what I have.

Thanks again for your 'daytime' photos of Barcelona, as well as those of Madrid.

First, those are amazing photos. thanks!

And second, the architectural richness is quite incredible (and we in Toronto seem to get excited about the crappy concrete buildings of the 60's and 70's).

Actually I found the architecture of central Madrid over the top. It's like a candy land of ideas for the historicist condo developers here in Toronto. That is not to detract from the city itself which I found fascinating and vibrant when I was there last in 2002. Spain is definately a country I wouldn't mind going back to time and time again.

Ah! ... Gaudi!

What amazing and beautiful forms he created from concrete. And how influential he was as a result of his engineering and expressive genius and sculptural use of structural materials. So many have stood on his shoulders, here and elsewhere.

Ha! Nobody wins the prize. Actually, his sinuous effects were mostly achieved using traditional Catalan construction methods of bricks and mortar - and a language of geometric forms, elliptical, hyperbolic and catenary curves, and glazed ceramic cladding including broken champagne bottles and dinner plates. Though I think there was Portland cement used in the rooftop elements of Casa Mila, and concrete in the foundations of the Sagrada Familia.

Truer words never spoken--it's like Electric Ladyland for the Chedingtonistas...

Madrid and Barcelona,Spain-Nice!

MM: Good Madrid and Barcelona pics! Spain-with its mediterreanean climate-is very inviting during the cooler northern Winter months but I realize it can get quite hot there in the Summer. The two cities look quite inviting to me!
