Miscellany Toronto Photographs: Then and Now

Then and Now for May 2, 2013.

Then. Mar. 10, 1916. 'Ice hanging from buildings in lane. Rear of 10 Toronto Street, N side.'

That building to the right was, of course, the wonderful Masonic Hall/Canada Permanent Building:

Prime real estate; I wonder why its hasn't been parceled off and sold.

For a long time I've kind of toyed with the idea the city should hand it over to the province and it should be spruced up inside and made the Lt. Governor's official residence. Mitch Hepburn, be his name ever cursed for doing so, stupidly robbed his posterity of Chorley Park, and we're never going to get it back. But Casa Loma is stately and well-known, and it has that charming hill down to centre of town. I know it's never going to happen, but I kind of wish it would. :)

Then and Now for May 3, 2013.

Then. Osgoode Street. This street used to run from University to Chestnut. c1930ish I think. The old Armoury - demolished in 1963 - is on the left, Osgoode Hall on the right. In the distance the white building is of course the long gone Registry Building; oft talked about in these forums.

Now. October 2012. Osgoode street is gone but the alignment/right of way remains. Osgoode Hall survives on.

I'm with you on this one; there should be enough room on the grounds for both a Toronto museum and an official estate.

The building didn't always look so spiffy - turns out it just needed a good scrub, but I can understand looking at the pictures below how some might have thought it to be demode.
