Metrolinx: Presto Fare Card

Would be better if we could get threshold passes on Presto for the TTC. For an adult, passing $12.50 on the Presto card on a day, it automatically behaves like a daily pass. Passing $43.75 between Sunday and Saturday, it behaves like a weekly pass. Passing $146.25 within a calendar month, it behaves like a monthly pass.

The Saturday, Sunday, or statutory holidays Family Pass would have to be preset using a website, either within the family computer/smartphone, library, or a kiosk. The family members would register their Presto cards for such a situation.

Everything other than a monthly cap is in the works, apparently it's to hard for the presto system to keep track of more then two different caps for fares.

Not likely as the family pass is pretty much gone after our Mayor deduced that children should ride free. Plus the TTC wants everyone to have their own pass and aren't setting up the system to allow multiple poel to use the same pass. Only a few systems using Presto allow one card to pay for multiple pole and it requires manipulation by staff.

This is the biggest problem with fare payment on the TTC and GO: operators/fare inspectors having complete discretion, combined with not knowing how to do their jobs correctly. The policies in place are generally good, Metrolinx/GO/TTC are usually pretty good about responding to freak incidents like this or minor stuff like if one GO station has its readers go down they quickly tweet out to just go ahead and board your train, "fare inspectors are aware and you will not be ticketed"...then surprise, surprise!

Anne Marie Aikins, a spokesperson for Metrolinx, the provincial arms-length agency that operates GO and the Presto system, said the problem was likely related to a widespread outage that hit Presto on Nov. 16, when an employee accidentally cancelled thousands of cards.

“He was doing some sort of an update and he literally pressed one button wrong and it cancelled a bunch of cards,” said Aikins.

Although Presto cards are used by transit agencies across the GTHA and Ottawa, the problem only affected cards used to tap on for GO trips. Aikins said Metrolinx quickly recognized the problem and ensured it couldn’t be repeated, but affected customers still had to either get a Metrolinx employee to unblock their card or follow the steps to do it themselves. Richardson didn’t know that.

So someone at Presto accidentally hit the wrong button and cancelled thousands of cards? This was also BEFOFE the scheduled maintenance of the Presto system from the 17th-19th. I’m glad that they ensured it would not happen again, but it’s surprising that a mass cancellation of cards can be done with such little effort.

Wait, you're surprised that our own poorly thought out and absurdly expensive farecard system has the equivalent of a self-destruct button?

Although hard to believe, systems with their human components are not infallible. It's like when Windows asks us "Are you sure (Y?N)?" One distracted moment...

Or in a Unix environment which has zero verification questions - **insert deadly secret code** "rm -r *.*" It's actually fairly easy to make a mistake in life. I wish I could say I had made few.

New Presto reload machine at King. Screen is way more responsive and seems a little more faster than the current ones.

Does it ask you if you want to cancel your transaction one screen after you approved aprovid it theough or is that onl a feture of the ones used for go transit?

The small Presto add-value machines have always been light years faster than the GO ticket machines.

The cancel after approve only occurs if you remove your Presto card too quickly after approve. Keep the Presto card in the slot until asked to remove it. The new value is written to the Presto card a few seconds after the Interac machine says "Approved", so do not yank your Presto too fast.
