Lyon also known as Lyons is a city in east central France. It is the third largest French city, the first being Paris and the second Marseille. It is a major centre of business, situated between Paris and Marseilles, and has a reputation as the French capital of gastronomy and a significant role in the history of cinema.

Together with its suburbs and satellite towns, Lyon forms the second largest metropolitan area in France after Paris, with 1,783,400 inhabitants at the 2007 estimate, and approximately the 20th to 25th largest metropolitan area of Western Europe.

The inner city of Lyon is formed by Lyon and the Villeurbanne anf form a city of 600,000 inhabitants.
Lyon has 4 subway lines (700 000 passengers per day) and 3 light rails lines (150 000 passengers per day)

It is one of most dynamic city in Europe, the 17th most attractive european city for business. (25th in 2006 to 17th in 2007)
Lyon had a GDP of € 56.1 billion in 2004.

Thanks for the photos. Lyon looks - how shall I say this - very pleasant but also somewhat uninspiring. Don't get me wrong; it is a beautiful city with a lot of architecture and an inner city that would make just about any North American drool. At street level, though, it looks a little bit staid. A few dry cleaners and restaurants, some tidy cafes and a sprinkling of people but nothing of the metropolitan cacophony that greets the visitor to Paris. There's still something to be said about a really large city - how 10 million people living their lives instantly creates an urban circus regardless of how fantastic the surroundings might be. I think it is for this reason that I'd rather live in LA than Lyon, even though one has fantastic alleys and second empire avenues, and the other one has gaudy strip mall arterials hung with smog.

I understand but in an other way Lyon does only have 1.8 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area.
