A Walk Around the West End

I like to walk around neighbourhoods to see how people live. I chose Holland Park, where it seemed quite posh and upscale. Don't think I can afford a place here!

Back when these were build, each door probably led to one house. But now I wonder how badly subdivided they are to generate more income.

These ones have less ornaments and don't seem as posh. But I expect them to still cost an arm and a leg!

You can definitely see the influence of design in Britain at that time on heritage architecture in Toronto.

London Calling...West End Girls perhaps...

HKS: Interesting pictures of rowhouse blocks in the West End of London-
I find the pedestrian barrier guards interesting and also the British license plates noted.

Again I am thinking of appropriate music-like The Clash's "London Calling"
or perhaps better yet The Pet Shop Boys "West End Girls" fits this bill...

You can definitely see the influence of design in Britain at that time on heritage architecture in Toronto.

You can? They look distinctly British to me, though similar historical references informed our architecture at the same time. It's like comparing the neo-Modernist buildings of Cartagena or Rotterdam posted on the World Photos thread with recent Toronto buildings by our local design culture - they're not interchangeable.

I think TonyV's dictum ...

As I walk around Toronto these days I am pleased to be able to say I like what I see, and I can say it's definitely Toronto that I am looking at .

... can be applied across time.

Thanks for the pictures. There's something about London that makes me feel very comfortable when I am there and i think these pictures help exhibit why that might be. While certainly not a spitting image of Toronto row housing, you can see some of the similarities and influences in those pictures. Last time we were there back in April 08, we went for a walk in the neighbourhoods surrounding the Portebello Market and came across a similar scene (though I'm sure even more expensive) and there were plenty of times where we thought "it'd be cool to live here".
