Waterloo Region Transit Developments (ION LRT, new terminal, GRT buses)

I'm in Waterloo for school right now and one of our frosh events had an LRT vehicle on display. It's really quite narrow in the passageways between the seats.

Pretty common on most transit systems in the world. The TTC subway is an exception, its huge compared to most transit systems.

I just rode the London Tube and Paris Metro and this kind of stuff is par for the course for spacing between seats

Only away from the doors. Closer to the doors are benches along the walls with a large amount of standing space. Interior arrangements are optimized for the considered amount of time between stations, and whether or not emphasis should be placed on the necessity of providing seats for distance, or room for standing, for shorter trips.
 
^ More applicable to GO DD coaches than LRT, but obvious for both...*especially* with quick-release front wheels that can be popped off in two seconds, thus reducing the space taken even more.

In the newer DD coaches, there's a space either side of the doors where you can stand a bike on the bars and fork tips w/ the front wheel popped off, takes far less space, and leaves the very awkward area under the stairs usable still for the seats.

It's all a bit too sophisticated for Toronto though....

Btw: The system for 'lashing' a bike on the Flexities is utterly ridiculous. I just use a loop of Velcro that I carry with me on the bike to secure the rear wheel rim to GO bus bike racks.
