Hong Kong Supertall Update: One Island East

Third photo thread of my recent trip to Hong Kong

One Island East (308m, built 2008) is one of Hong Kong's newest supertall skyscrapers. At 1,010 ft, it is a borderline supertall.

Located in Taikoo Place in eastern Hong Kong Island, it is located in a strange location (part of a recent trend in Hong Kong of building large office buildings away from traditional CBDs). On one side of the building there are old tenement buildings, on another side there are industrial buildings, and another side faces TaiKoo Shing, one of the city's largest privately-owned residential complexes.

The base of the tower is quite nicely designed, suiting western tastes, probably reflecting the developer's western rather than Chinese background (the developer is Swire, also owner of Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways). The streets around it have been paved with red bricks, while on the side that faces residential buildings there is a nicely-designed public garden.

I really like the lobby, and the curtainwall on this building. I don't like the exhaust again on this one. It ruins it's elegance.

I misread the title of this thread as ... One Easter Island ... conjuring up images of a giant Moai.

I too like the base and lobby of this building (a very nice use of glass). The isolation of the building by its grounds and landscaping is a bit odd but perhaps empty space like this is very much valued in this very crowded urban environment.

The open area in front of the building is a preexisting park in the "suburban" housing development you see around the tower (the white and brown buildings), and is one of the few bigger green spaces in the neighbourhood. The area is still predominantly residential, so there is a bit more open space than the true urban core.

It really does seem out of place, but a beautiful building nonetheless. Stunning lobby, and I really like the public plaza. The public art all over it is beautiful!
