Hazel calls for crackdown on campaign hijinks

Mayor Hazel McCallion is calling on the Province to crack down on candidate misconduct in future elections.
"This was not a nice election ... it reflects on all of us running for office," McCallion bluntly told councillors during the first post-election session of City Council.
McCallion said she will ask the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) to set up a special task force to look into the matter and lobby Queen's Park to change the province's Election Act.
Although she did not go into specifics, McCallion, no doubt, had in mind several ugly incidents that occurred in Mississauga during the campaign.
The incidents, which received widespread media attention, included:
* first-time candidate Adnan Hashmi being charged by police with intimidation and impersonating a police officer
* veteran councillor Nando Iannicca becoming embroiled in a parking lot fracas with a challenger
* rookie councillor Eve Adams being accused of forcing her staff to work on her campaign.
The mayor said she has never seen anything like it in politics, and "I've been around 27 years."
McCallion said the Election Act, which governs how elections are run, must be given teeth to discipline candidates when warranted. The public, she said, have complained to her.
"It has to be dealt with, (but) I have no power," she said.
