If you've ever taken the QEW over the James N. Allen Skyway between Burlington and Hamilton,
your eyes were probably fixated on the giant smoke belching steel mills of Hamilton Harbour.
But far below the skyway there is actually a vibrant neighbourhood that spans the long strip
of sand that separates Burlington Bay from Lake Ontario. In Victorian times, Hamilton Beach
was a summer playground for Hamilton's elite. Over the years, the neighbourhood has had its
ups and downs, but luckily, the current trend is up. Over the past few years many of the
remaining Victorian houses have been renovated while new developments are filling in the
blighted areas. The entire length of the beach strip is accessible and open to the public and
remains popular for summer recreation.

gotta love that zoom lens on the beach. ;)

great photos as usual, flar.

Hamilton Beach-an interesting place...

Flar: Good pics of Hamilton Beach-I figured that the shortcut around the west end of Lake Ontario would be interesting- let me mention these pics:
#3-Good shot of Toronto in the background distance
#9,41-You have an eye for the ladies...
#12,37-what is that lighthouse and lift bridge?
#27-cute little beach bungalows...
#33-nice stone house
#35-Hamilton Skyway and the QEW?
#39-good archway pic
#57-inlet with bridges-what is their names?
#59-a nice brick house fixer upper...

If I'm not mistaken that lighthouse is one of the oldest in Ontario? The house beside it is the lightkeeper's house. Both are in a terrible state of repair.

Flar, not sure if you are aware but along the Hamilton Beach strip is a monument and a burial ground. There was naval battle here between the Americans and British during the War of 1812. I believe that one of the ships is submerged off shore.

Actually both are under renovation. The lighthouse is suppose to open to the public next year.

Nice job flar

Flar, I was wondering when you would get around to the Beach strip; I think you've pictured most of Hamilton by now. The "strip" was a pretty rundown area when I was a kid in Hamilton. It's upgraded as you point out. Not too many of the derelict slummy cottages are left. They were numerous 25 years ago.

Hutch's, which you have in one picture, is a Hamilton institution.

Good pictures, as usual. Thank you.

#57-inlet with bridges-what is their names?

The picture shows the canal connecting Lake Ontario and Hamilton Harbour. The twin bridges of the Skyway are in the foreground. Newer bridge dates from the 1980s, the older one with the steel superstructure (partly obscured) is from the 1950s. Beyond them is the original lift bridge, which raises and lowers when ships pass through.

Not too many of the derelict slummy cottages are left. They were numerous 25 years ago.

And across the lift bridge on Burlington Beach, they only expropriated and wiped away a whole slew of beachfront cottages over the past decade or less--so the only beachfrontish stuff left is that closest to bridge...

Wow, awesome pics ... I had no idea this area even existed ... though, I'm not sure how comfortable I'd feel swimming in that water.

Nice shots! I remember going to some auction type place in this area back in the 70's/80's sometime. Almost bought a used pinball machine. I do remember the area being dumpy.

Ever since the city opened up the Beach trail a few years ago the area has flourished.

Branthaven will be building townhouses (starting price $270,000) next year.

Across the street another developer is currently building townhouses, all sold out within a month. So the area is quite popular for successful housing developments.

Interesting, I didn't know that.

Great pix! Is 00150 a house or one of those incognito hydro stations. I've always wanted to live in a building like that.

It's not a cleverly disguised hydro station (I do know what you're talking about, and it looks like it could be). I don't know what's in that building, I think the sign said something about Department of Corrections or something?

The signs for these developments like to downplay that they're in Hamilton. One of them says "Burlington Bay's best selling townhome community!"

Thanks all. One of these shots even made it to the daily banner photo :)
