Gehry-Designed $2 Billion Development Approved by Utah Town

By Patrick Cole

Aug. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Architect Frank Gehry's trademark metal-clad forms are coming to a $2 billion residential and entertainment complex in a small western town.

City officials in Lehi, Utah, on Aug. 28 approved plans by Brandt Andersen, owner of the Utah Flash basketball team, to build an 85-acre Gehry-designed development that includes an amphitheater, hotel, shopping center, restaurants, residences and man-made lakes.

Lehi, located 30 miles south of Salt Lake City, has a population of about 36,000.

Andersen, a 29-year-old entrepreneur from Provo, Utah, plans to build a sports arena near the complex for the Flash, a National Basketball Association [Development League] expansion team. Gehry also will design the 10,000-seat arena.

The 450-foot-high hotel will become the tallest building in Utah, Kent Partridge, a spokesman for Andersen, said yesterday in a phone interview.

``We expect this to make Lehi into a focal point for a sports and healthy-living community,'' Partridge said.

In a phone interview, Andersen said the final design, which is not yet complete, will ``look substantially different'' from anything else Gehry has done.

The Lehi City Council approved the project's zoning and conceptual plans. The developers can now move forward with detailed civil engineering plans and architectural design.

``My hope with this project is that we could come up with something that would complement the natural beauty of the state,'' Andersen said.

Green Space

The Pritzker Prize-winning architect, based in Santa Monica, California, is famous for using unconventional materials, such as titanium and corrugated steel on facades, and for his buildings' wavy shapes. He designed the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the Guggenheim Bilbao museum in Spain. He currently has projects in the works in Panama City and Las Vegas.

Andersen is the founder and chief executive officer of G Code Ventures, which invests in businesses and creative projects. While a student at Brigham Young University, he founded uSight, a provider of software products for small businesses.

Groundbreaking will take place sometime in 2008, Partridge said. Two man-made lakes will be built first, and about 70 percent of the site will be reserved for water and green space, he said.

The arena is scheduled to be ready for the Utah Flash's 2009-10 season, Partridge said. The team will play its inaugural season on Nov. 24 in Anaheim, California. The team currently plays in Orem, Utah.
