Gay Cowbourne, Toronto councillor for Ward 44, Scarborough East, has withdrawn her nomination for the Nov. 13 municipal election, making a hotly contested race even more wide-open.

Cowbourne's announcement comes less than a week after Councillor Sylvia Watson said she won't seek re-election following her defeat in last Thursday's by-election in Parkdale-High Park.

Candidates have until Sept. 29 to file nomination papers for the election.

Cowbourne was facing a serious challenge from Ron Moeser, who was trying to win the seat back after Cowbourne defeated him in the previous election.

Cowbourne, who was generally supportive of Mayor David Miller, said in an interview that for "lifestyle" reasons she wasn't sure she could commit to serving a full four-year term.

Kevin Wellington, Richard Rieger, Kevin Richardson and Donald Blair are also running.

Watson had taken a leave of absence from council to run as a Liberal. She lost to NDP candidate Cheri DiNovo.

Watson's decision to quit prompted 11 candidates to run in the ward.

I'll always remember Ms. Cowbourne for her vandalised election signs...
