Does anyone know if there are part time courses at night that teach other languages? I'm looking for Polish language courses, but I can't seem to find any being taught in a classroom setting. There are private tutors, but holy cow are they expensive and just outright unaffordable.

I tried looking at U of T, but not much luck.

Ryerson and York don't seem to offer them.

I know that the Toronto District School Board has some language courses. My girlfriend is interested in learning German so we've looked in to it. Usually you get a booklet in the mail, but the TDSB website has information as well. Not sure if they teach Polish though.

Thanks for your help guys, but I couldn't find anything without going the private tutor route. Nothing at TDSB for night school polish courses. :( Looks like I'll have to go the "teach myself" route instead.

Perhaps you could try to look for a Russian language course? I'm sure that those are much more common, and from there it should be quite easy to move over to another Slavic language like Polish (especially easy since I believe Polish uses the English/Latin alphabet.)
Though I wonder why there aren't more language classes in Toronto, one of the most multicultural megacities in the world. I would have thought that they'd be abundant, but apparently not so.

While in this thread, does anyone know of a reliable and/or tried and true Portuguese language class? I'll probably just pick it up through some self study and knowledge of Spanish and French, but I'm a bit curious.

I doubt learning Russian will help him learn Polish. Beyond having to learn Cyrllic, there's the fact that while some basic words sound similar, there's a heck of a lot of differences. Even Czech and Slovak which are much closer to Polish than Russian are not mutually intelligible with Polish (on my trip to the Czech Republic in 2001, my mom and her friend tried talking to Czechs in Polish, and while the Czechs understood them, they didn't understand the Czechs replies...in the end they said to use English instead).

As for the original question, beyond Saturday school classes for elementary/high school students, I don't know of any. Those classes are aimed at people who already speak the language though. Being born here, I always felt inadequate in those classes. Despite the fact that "technically" my "first" language was Polish, I'm far from a native speaker.

Russian will NOT help me with Polish at all. There are some similarities, but for the most part, Russian is more different.

A friend told me about the Rosetta stone program and it looks like it's worth it based on customer reviews alone.
