"Toronto Municipal Abattoir". I was about to ask: Was it a City-Owned abattoir? Then I thought of asking that Google and found: https://tspace.library.utoronto.ca/bitstream/1807/68573/1/Barter_Hillary_C_201411_MA_thesis.pdf

It was and was built in 1914. Page 51 reads: "A different kind of slaughterhouse - the Toronto Municipal Abattoir – was built around the same time (1914). Rather than integrate slaughter and processing, this was a slaughterhouse only and it was owned and operated by the municipality." So, now we know!

Look even then, how the reusable refuse is sorted and stacked by material type in front of the demolition work. I thought that pulling the wire and steel was a modern practice.

There used to be FAR more re-use of material from demolitions - partly because wooden beams are probably easier to re-use than rebar!
