Eurovision in Canada

Canada’s path to Eurovision would likely begin with CBC/Radio-Canada becoming a full member of the European Broadcasting Union — not an impossible step, since they’re already an affiliate. Our regional counterpart, NABA, already collaborates closely with the EBU on a range of international broadcasting initiatives.

One potential wrinkle is that EBU member networks are publicly funded and typically ad-free, meaning a Canadian Eurovision broadcast might also need to run commercial-free if — or when — we join. Another consideration is that Bell Media currently holds the Canadian rights to Eurovision but hasn’t exercised them in recent years, leaving the question of a “Eurovision Canada” still up in the air.

That would require us to win first. You only need a venue if you're hosting, and you only host if you win. (The only other need for a venue is if you hold an event to select who competes (as many European countries do) but I doubt that event could fill Scotiabank Arena yet, maybe someday). And it would also require for whoever is planning it to select Toronto as the host City after we won, which tbh I'm not certain would happen. I think you could argue the preference might be to put it in Ottawa for our first time hosting, being the national capital and all. Otherwise it's a fight between Toronto and Montreal, and Montreal is perceived as more European than Toronto, so I don't think we are by any means a default hosting choice.

That said, I love Eurovision and would be so happy for Canada to be part of it. But let's not get ahead of ourselves, we need to get into the contest first before we even think about what happens when we win it someday.

and though unlikely to happen, I will nominate the amazing Alice Glass (Crystal Castles) as our first contestant. Sorry Celine! 🎶🎤🇪🇺

And The Hearn for the venue! While we’re on this fantasy trip, let’s get Jorn Weisbrodt as the lead on this.
