Dunkin' Donuts yanks Rachael Ray ad

By Carol Beggy and Mark Shanahan , Globe Staff | May 28, 2008

Does Dunkin' Donuts really think its customers could mistake Rachael Ray for a terrorist sympathizer? The Canton-based company has abruptly canceled an ad in which the domestic diva wears a scarf that looks like a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men. Some observers, including ultra-conservative Fox News commentator Michelle Malkin, were so incensed by the ad that there was even talk of a Dunkin' Donuts boycott. "The keffiyeh, for the clueless, is the traditional scarf of Arab men that has come to symbolize murderous Palestinian jihad," Malkin yowls in her syndicated column. "Popularized by Yasser Arafat and a regular adornment of Muslim terrorists appearing in beheading and hostage-taking videos, the apparel has been mainstreamed by both ignorant and not-so-ignorant fashion designers, celebrities, and left-wing icons." The company at first pooh-poohed the complaints, claiming the black-and-white wrap was not a keffiyeh. But the right-wing drumbeat on the blogosphere continued and by yesterday, Dunkin' Donuts decided it'd be easier just to yank the ad. Said the suits in a statement: "In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial." (In case you're wondering, the stylist who selected the offending scarf was not Gretta Enterprises boss Gretchen Monahan, who appears on Ray's TV show as a style consultant.) For her part, Malkin was pleased with Dunkin's response: "It's refreshing to see an American company show sensitivity to the concerns of Americans opposed to Islamic jihad and its apologists."

Michelle Malkin is pretty much among the most despicable "journalists" operating right now. She is the ghost of Julius Streicher disguised as a young Philipino woman.

The only terrorism evoked by Dunkin Donuts is that of a heart attack. And bad coffee. That's the real threat to America.

obeasa bin larden. you just know he's up to some diabetical plot!

when i see this picture, islamic terrorist doesn't come to mind. yet with the paranoid focus on it and the fact that her skin is toasty brown and she is wearing a scarf which does look like it has some middle eastern influence, at least the colors could, i have a sudden urge to search for arabic porn after seeing that pic.

some people get scared, some people get horny. to each their own. :D

Ganjavih,

Get out your dispensing pad; Michelle Malkin needs a prescription of some kind.

Geez, I thought criticizing someone's way of dress is the purview of the Taliban's Ministry of Vice and Virtue. I guess Michelle Malkin should stop wearing the bra and proudly show her nipples on liveTV just about now to personify the American freedom of choice.

Unfortunately, there is no medical cure for brain-dead right wing nuts. And I don't even think the best Vienna-trained psychoanalysts can help them. These people, the Ann Coulters and the Michelle Malkins of the world, are utterly clueless, hopeless, and useless. They contribute nothing to political debate, and actually only polarise people and promote hate. They're really just downright dumb. There are smart conservatives. These two aren't them.

I wonder how Malkin's Filipino immigrant parents feel about her support for the detention of Japanese Americans during World War II. They must be proud.

ganjavih:

Plausibly nothing - given Japan did invade the Philippines in the Second World War and had been fairly brutal to the population during the occupation.

However, given the fact that the southernmost island in the archipelago (Mindanao) has a history of radical Islamism, god forbid should someone be concerned about terrorism in the US come to the conclusion that all Filipinos poses a security risk, including our dear Ms. Malkin!

There is nothing better than prejudice served to whose who dish it out.

LOL, so a scarf that was chosen for style and has no significance for any symbolic purpose in the United States was pulled because its supposedly offensive to a select group of arab men who most likely aren't the kind of arabs living within the US to begin with?

Interesting... The biggest non-issue issue I've ever seen.

"It's refreshing to see an American company show sensitivity to the concerns of Americans opposed to Islamic jihad and its apologists."

It's a fucking scarf, kids.

a fucking scarf? as opposed to a killing scarf? those crazy jihadists have a scarf for every occasion! but how can you tell the difference? is it because she has latte on her hands? ;)
