Downtown/Waterfront Casino

Montreal has a nice casino, but in my experience that's generally the exception. Most aren't 'casino royale' quality :) If it is architecturally interesting, done tastefully, and the proceeds go to social housing and infrastructure for TO then I might warm to the possibilty.
 
Isn't this a desperate measure that decaying NA cities resort to in hopes of bringing more vibrancy and cash to their city centres- err Detroit comes to mind. Surely Toronto doesn't need this, especially on the waterfront. It all sounds very tacky to me.

I don't think it is desperate (with respect to Toronto). Casinos are considered by some to be a legitimate form of entertainment rather than a vice. But it is true that some cities over-emphasize their casinos (Gatineau is another example). One such facility on the waterfront (or anywhere else in the city) would attract some visitors, but most would probably never even go. Montreal has a nice casino, but it is one of many attractions in the city. The same would be true for Toronto
 
The province has no reason to sanction a casino in Toronto unless it received a significant portion of the proceeds from it. Maybe a 50-50 arrangement?

Anyway, gambling is simply a tax on the stupid. I say bring it on.
 
I think I will pass on the idea of a casino. Putting a casino within easy reach of those who could not afford the trip to Niagara, Rama, or Vegas is a bad idea. I have serious concern with people coming off work, heading to Money Mart, and down to the Jack Diamond designed harbourfront casino to "strike it rich".

I can see the province not approving the idea - after all the money that is sunk into Fallsview (Niagara) and Rama (Orillia) - all of which are potential contested ground politically speaking.

At least Montreal had the sense to put its casino out on the Island, in the old French Expo Pavillion. Not downtown. As Aislin pointed out, you need to take Boul. des Idiots.
 
done. interestingly enough I was able to do it despite not living in Toronto. I would have thought that they would at least have mandated that you type in a Toronto postal code. i left it blank and it didn't dispute it.

It's really strange that the survey had so many questions about location, since location preferences apparently do not matter. I wonder what the rationale for those questions was, or whether City staff just didn't know that location preferences don't factor. And what about the questions re: design, jobs, recommendations to reduce problem gambling, etc? Do the City or Toronto residents really have a say in that?
