Several downtown streets in Brampton were getting ripped off for water and sewer works by the Region of Peel, so the city has decided to tack on their long-proposed streetscaping project on top (I mean, it makes sense that if you're ripping something up, you might as well reassemble it nicer).
Right now, Queen Street and Main Street are one travel lane and one parking lane in both directions and a very narrow sidewalk.
After the reconstruction, they'll be one car traffic lane in each direction, one raised cycling lane in each direction, and a wider sidewalk with more street furniture. All surfaces will be made of tight, interlocking brick pavement.
They're going to doing a soil cell layout for the street trees, similar to work on the Water's Edge Promenade in the East Bayfront (more DTAH work). The street lighting poles will have Wi-Fi- connectivity.
Council today, with full support of the Downtown BIA, approved a full street closure for up to three years to do the infrastructure upgrades and streetscaping work, instead of maintaining partial access. Should be finished by 2020.
