We should be able to confirm if we agree or not with their figures.

To my understanding, in many countries that do auto-file; you are sent a note from the government when the return is filed, with the figures and any impact.

You then have a set period before the government moves to collect anything owing/interest kicks in or returns you money.

I don't think its particularly burdensome.

Government has all the T-slips by the time you do; and already knows any deduction at source.

So generally government has all your tax info prior to March 1st each year.

Letters/digital, secure communications could be sent out by March 15 each year, you have til April 30 to file an objection or correction.

While we're at it; stock brokerages, including online brokerages, should be required to deduct at source on capital gains.

Either the client could provide direction as to the bracket; or a query could be made electronically to CRA as to which bracket applies.
