Elections coming in the fall, the ball gets rolling and the issues thrown around Friday night in a fun way at City Idol. Also, I've been told the Music Hall has been renovated, so it's an excuse to see it.

Almost three million people live in Toronto. All important decisions are made by forty five people. They’re called City Councillors.

City Idol is looking for new Councillors.

Elections have become so dull and mundane that most people simply tune them out. Is it possible to turn things around? Can an election actually be a time when people step forward with new ideas, new energy, a sense of optimism and maybe even a little imagination?

The Music Hall • 147 Danforth Avenue
(near Broadview Station)
doors open at 7pm • show starts at 8pm • $4
Tickets on sale at 6pm (two max per purchaser)

Ha, that would be nice. Only two known candidates, all trinity spadina, were there (and we noticed a few assistants to various councillors).

But the City Idol contestants themselves were from all corners of the city and there was lots of young, but a fair bit off of old, too. It was quite a wonderful event. An entire auditorium full of people excited about the next municipal election. Stay tuned for the run off's in the next two months or so.

I would be interested to see if any new and decent ideas are generated (as opposed to providing a platform for wanna-be politicians who have not yet established themselves).

It was interested, the people who gave politician sounding speeches tended not to get any votes.

Loved the Hour Town segment with Colin Vaughan on CP24 the other night. Wanted to make it out Friday night, I read it was good, however 80+ speeches seems a little too much for one evening.

This whole City Idol contest is a brilliant concept and I would love to see the selected candidate actually get elected!

I too thought 80 speeches was not going to work, too long. But each one was a minute of unique drama, and didn't get boring.

shawnmicallef,

I'm curious, are they getting any funding to put this program on? I imagine that when the candidate is selected that a host of organizations and businesses have offered their in-kind services?
