299 Queen Street West (ex-ChumCity Building) certainly looks magnificent this week with blue and red lighting, which I assume was set up in remembrance of the recent earthquake in Haiti (the CN Tower was lit up in a similar manner). Too bad it wasn't done for a more happier occasion.

That looks really good. They should install that lighting permanently, that allows the colours to be changed.

I agree. I walked by it on Friday and thought that was the best I have ever seen the building look. The lighting really makes all of the details on the building stand out.

considering the only way they can light the building is by using par cans on the sidewalk, making it permanent is not an option unless they could attach the lights to buildings across the street.

They set up for their Haiti special which aired Friday.

^ lighting the building from across the street would negate the effects of the shadowing, which is half the fun.

They could install lights into the side walks, in theory, and have the same effect. This has been done other places.

Of course it will never happen.

Relax, we've lit up plenty of landmarks already over the past few decades. Recent additions include several landmarks in St. Lawrence and, in time, Union Station's bold facade. I could see this facade being lit up as part of the Entertainment District revitalization.

The building looks so cool with the lights! I wish it was permanent (it obviously isn't with all the exposed cables at sidewalk level). It is something we in Toronto need to embrace. Our city would look so, so much better at night.

And in a rather more vulgar vein (not that that's bad or anything), the Yonge St Arcade...

Are you sure these are for Haiti? I figured they are planning on installing permanent lighting into the sidewalk and are just testing things out first.

^ I wasn't able to find a press release from CTV, but why else would somebody light up a building in Haiti's national colours for only a week after the earthquake? (which is exactly what the CN Tower did, and they did issue a statement that they were doing it)

I wish you were right about them making this permanent. If not, somebody should write to CTV telling them how much they appreciate the night lighting.

You should write a letter to CTV. I wrote one to the CN Tower regarding the absence of lighting on the upper portion of the main observation deck.
