What happened to our discussion of Caribana, and then what happened to my question about our missign discussion? If there was something inappropriate about either, please let me know.

It was closed because all that was being discussed was black and white stereotypes.

Closed and deleted? Don't you think that's a bit draconian?

"all that was being discussed was black and white stereotypes."

It seems to me that part of the discussion concerned precisely whether there might be any merit to some of those stereotypes. "Stereotype" is the pejorative term for an inductive generalization about a group of people; some stereotypes are clearly unjustified and deserve being labelled as "merely" stereotypes, but some may be warranted generalizations.

It's a shame that people often can't discuss this issue without fear of social condemnation and censorship.

I do appreciate all the work you've done for this forum, billy.

My all time favourite forum name is: LordMandeep. He never posts, but I see him signed on sometimes, like he was today. Perhaps he reads all the drivel we churn out and goes away somewhere to sit quietly, thinking about it all, trying to make sense of it, and sobbing to himself. Or perhaps he is the dude sitting in the next veal fattening pen to mine, here in the design factory, watching me with suspicion. For some reason the name LordMandeep makes me think of Caribana, reggae music, and movies with bad production values from the 1970's with guys in sky blue crushed velvet suits and matching fedoras wearing lots of heavy gold jewellery. I can see LordMandeep running a karaoke bar. I can see him dancing wildly at parties beneath a spinning disco ball, or singing with LadyMandeep and the Deep-ettes at weddings. But I guess we'll never know the real LordMandeep because he never posts.

^ A quick google reveals he posts at skyscraperpage. One more quick search reveals he lives in Brampton. Dare I try for a third?

Having grown up in Malton and Bramalea, I can attest to the fact that Mandeep is a popular Sikh name (if that means anything).

This thread hasn't been active for a while but I couldn't find any other Caribana thread.

This is for the guys (or gals) who like the Caribana Girls.

What are we to do, if anything, with the festival formerly called Caribana? The festival is nearly always mired in violence, with murders occurring several times in the history of the event, including this year's. I also question if the murder today on Jane st is somehow connected, as murders seem to happen in quick succession in Toronto's Caribbean community.

I think the violence is overblown. It was an unfortunate incident but these things happen. Read the list of "violence" over the last 25 years. Less than 10 instances of violence and that's including cops getting hit with beer bottles.
